Most of the corn is out in my neck of the woods. Beans are getting close but I haven't seen anyone cutting yet. The question is, anyone hear any reports from the farmers regarding birds. I'm hoping the thick cover this year distorted the summer survey numbers down. Last year was encouraging in NE Kansas and I still hold out hope the heavy rains didn't take as much of a toll as it seems on both pheasants and quail.
 
Well I went "dove" hunting over the weekend and found a covey of quail along a hedge row that I thought might be holding some "dove". So I let my pointers work them a couple times and then worked a few singles.

We saw more quail in the cornfields here in east central Kansas than we have in 10 years. I hear they are seeing a lot more birds than last year in the milo they are cutting in west central Kansas. Of course we all know that may not be saying much. It sounds like the hunting will be good in spots from what I hear from out there, and what I have seen when I have been out there.
 
I just got off the phone with a friend of mine who lives in Ness county. He farms in Ness, Lane, Scott, Finney and Hodgeman. His exact words were 'We are seeing lots of pheasants cutting milo". He acts like there are a lot of very young birds.
 
Our farmer friend said they were going to try and start Milo harvest the first of this week, haven't heard if he got started or not.
 
Eastern Barton Co area has been amazing during the Milo harvest. It has looked like waves rolling as the Combine gets close, then pushes them 200 yards and then gets close again. I think some areas have 100-200 birds per section of Milo.

We are currently cutting Milo and have seen several groups of pheasant. Definitely think the population is dramatically better than previous years. We have a hunting lodge and I usually have opening weekend booked but this year I have nothing. I suppose people are still apprehensive about the population. From what we have seen hunting this season should be promising at least on our properties.
