Harvest Progress

Despite our recent rain event, there were combines in the corn fields yesterday evening around here. I saw a cut milo field when I was in W KS a week ago and there wasn't any standing corn in the area. This leads me to believe that if things go well (stay dry) that most of the crops will be out come opener.

Hey W KS guys (GCB, MR Byrd, and anybody traveling through), how bout a harvest report for the group?:)

Harvest is in full swing in Seward and Stevens counties. No rain out here to slow things down. Elevators are filling up with lots of corn and milo being piled on the ground. At the current rate harvest should be completed well ahead of opening season. However we do need moisture before season if not the scenting conditions for our dogs will be terrible.

Thanks for the report! Yes, I'm hoping for some pre-season moisture myself. Those incredibly dry opener are tough on hunter and k-9 companion.

maybe if it's dry the birds will hear good, walk away, hang arround for awhile for good dogs and patient hunters/handlers

up here harvest is in full swing corn milo and beans a couple farmers are done but still alot of others but they way things are going we should b harvest free for the opener if not before

slow going here . has been raining alot. should be in full swing middle of next week. southern minn. had 7 to 9 inches of rain. will be a long fall for them. i-35 has been closed for a couple days because of it.

spent a couple days traveling from hwy 96 going east from Colorado to Hwy 183 south to Greensburg then out to Witchta and south. Combines are rolling everywhere. In central KS, corn is almost complete, beans almost complete, milo starting and dryland wheat getting ready to drill.

Farmer I talked to said he will be done in a couple of weeks (many acreas).

harvest is still going good here the piles of corn on the ground at the elevators is telling me so and they are starting to harvest milo and beans i think the only ones not done by opening weekend will be the real big boys who farm over half of 2 counties

No rain in the near future, so the combines should continue to roll. In my travels I see the corn nearly cut along with the beans, the milo harvest is well under way. Assuming the weather forecasters are correct and there will be no rain in the first half of October, I would say around here the corn and beans will be cut out by October 15th and the milo about half.

Conditions are extremely dry here at the moment and a good soaking rain would be welcome.

I'll take a dust cutting rain anytime before Nov. 10 or so.....last year saw too much rain and wet snow for the opening 3-4 days and getting down dirt roads was absolutely impossible.

chuckling hunter- those wet dirt clay roads are something- here it's like when you walk- or drive:)- on wet beach sand-

I traded in a nice Honda Civic on a 2009 Ford Escape 4WD- got two of them now

like M.R. says-

Combines rolling into the night last night cutting corn, beans and milo.

A trace of rain this morning.

Hey MR,
How's the bird looking out around Ensign? We have been hunting some CRP south of there for around 20 yrs,+/-.Before long,I'm going to have to find some cropland. These old legs and hips are wearing out.:):)

Haven't been out Ensign way lately, but I think you will see good numbers.

I hear you about wearing out. I have been getting around like an eighty year old man this summer. Doc checked me out and now I know why, the left knee is gone and left ankle is bone on bone. Too young to need so many new parts, but I am a high mileage vehicle.

The custom harvester I know out S.W. says he will be done with Milo in 20-25 days barring any weather events. Says a lot of the milo looks like a green turf field when they are done. Stalks still green, but the heads are mature. Lots of birds and says the last successful hatch was a good one ,with lots of little buggers running around in the 6-8 week class!!! Alot of quail in the milo they have been cutting!!! Still a lot of Habitat, since all the fields he has been cutting are no-till!!!

I'll talk to a land owner I hunt on that has more crops than you can shake a stick at if you in turn want to introduce me to the guy with the grass. I actually have the opposite problem you have. All I want is one good private CRP field.....sure would like to "trade" a couple milo fields for some CRP......

Would it look like this at sunset?

I can't tell if you're trying to pick a fight or invite a guy hunting. Your way of communicating is strange to me. Sure wish I could put a facial expression with your words........BTW, if you're as disrespectful in person as you come across here, I'm pretty sure the gent I'm referring to would spread your teeth across his driveway.
