Happenings Around Dodge City

There have been a few things happening around Dodge that I find a little amusing.

Recently, the old hangman's tree on top of Boot Hill was put to use again for an honest to goodness hanging. Story I got was that high winds relocated one of the two nooses closer to the ground than usual and a tourist went for a photo op, but passed out after putting the noose around his neck and hanged himself. He was cut down before any damage done, except pride.

It is about time for the deer/auto collisions to increase with the rut and rifle hunting season coming. Last rifle season a whitetail buck came into town and took refuge in the bath of a local title company. Now, just after midnight on Thursday night there was a car/steer collision within the city limits and Dodge City's favorite steer, El Capitan, was injured in a hit and run. El Cap's horn was broken and he had a fractured ankle. The city fathers think El Cap can be saved, although, the artist that created the life size bronze is deceased. Rumor has it that the eighteen year old boy, driving his grandmother's van, was texting at a high rate of speed.

The new special events center is under construction next to the casino. The center will feature ice, for hockey, special skating shows and instruction. There is an ad in the paper seeking an assistant skating instructor. Kansas Brittany, you interested? I have dibs on the Zamboni.

Checked the birth announcements in the paper this morning. No, before you ask, I didn't father any children recently. Always interesting to me that a name becomes popular and there will be a lot with the same name. Saw one today, that might not though. "Wayne Schweikhand and Stormy Swint, Dodge City, are the parents of a daughter, Heaven Lee Majestic Moon Stary Skye Schweikhand." Just saying.

Well, that catches you up on the latest from the Old West.

Don't think I'd make a good skate instructor, but that's pretty cool they're putting something like that in. Now if they could slow the crime rate it could be a great place to live....oh, and add a lake or 2 in the area.

Thanks for the update.

Thank you for the Update. Your area I will say is about exciting as mine.......Bob

Headed your way (Hanston), Sunday, November 14...will be around a few days but my boys will be there all week.

How is Murry doing...too bad about Sandy. Be careful if you go snake hunting.

Jim,

Thanks for asking about Murry. He was doing well on treatment and was about his same self again, but the last few days(off predisone now), it is back. I have an appointment with vet this afternoon. It may be off to K-State.

Maynard, thanks for getting us up to date. At least they did not name the kid Retch Sweeney or Rancid Crabtree........

More happenings in Dodge

Small page three article in the Dodge City Daily Globe today, "Gasoline Soaked Clothes Cause Small Explosion". There was a picture of the investigators looking at washers taken through a broken plate glass window at the Rainbow Launderette. The fire department would not release any names.

I was talking to the night janitor from the laundry today and he related the story to me. His friend that runs a c-store across the alley heard and explosion yesterday afternoon and ran to the laundry to find the glass blown out and washers moved around the laundry, but no one around. The laundry owner showed up and helped investigators solve the event, but there was no one there. A man showed up at the hospital with burns to the arms and face and was treated and released.

The janitor said that as he was cleaning the laundry last night, the man shows up with his arms bandaged. I apologize, but my Somalian accent is not very good, but here is what the man told the janitor----"Iz got thez paint on my clothes an Iz got two liter of gasssolene and washed them. Iz washed them in water at myz cafe an wrung them out. Iz put them inz thiz washer and went bac to chek anz lift the lid anz BOOM.

The blast broke out plate glass, moved the washers around the laundry, moved an interior wall and raised the ceiling. Surprised that it didn't send the man through the roof.

Just another day in Dodge.

Jim,

Just an update on Murry. He didn't have to go to K-State. A cortisone shot for now and continue on Baytril.
