We had a pretty fun day in the rain today. Double digit flushes pretty equal hen to rooster split, 2 man limit and one bird that tried to play some tricks on us got treated to some #4's.

Public land and I don't think we walked 100 miles!

you seem to have it dialed in this year! Im envious!
I'll miss a couple w/e's here. Headed to MT on Sunday night

Thought about it today, but the rain talked me out of it.

WisTurk, you guys got about an inch, didn't you?

How was the walking? And you raised HENS on public land? Thought DNR'd stopped releasing them. Native birds? That would be great news.

How'd Willie do in the rain?

Hunting in the rain can suck but I've always done great in the rain and the rain made me not have to go into work.

I wasn't hunting in Rock County so not sure what we got for rain here but it was pretty steady where I was hunting.

Place I was hunting is a big area that has good numbers of wild birds. Pretty common to see hens grouped up there.

Willy retrieved all 4 birds, and both dogs got some good points in. Willy had 2 different points where he could see the birds and he held steady. Once with 2 roosters and hen. Other time a big rooster ran out of some skinny cover right in front of him into a picked bean field and he didn't flinch.

Looks like a great day. I'm getting jealous of you all who's season is open already.

Way to go! I like hunting in the rain too. Does your State release a lot of birds?

Your keeping me hungry. My year has been pretty slow. Haven't seen the numbers like last year but just knowing they are out there keeps me pumped.

No surprise that Willie retrieved all 4 birds.

Measured the spurs of the bird I picked up on Tuesday and they were just over 5/8" but just short of 3/4". Biggest spurs I've taken (killed 2 other birds prior with 5/8" in the past).

Love the thick dark black spurs on that bird!

Awesome!

Looks like a lot of guys having some great success so far this season.

Do you still get hen tags with a patrons license?

Holymoses - it depends on the property. Some areas (ie Scuppernong) are stocked with both roosters and hens. You get a strip of ten tags to use for the season at those properties. You have to tag either sex bird, and once you've burned up the ten tags, you can't hunt pheasants at those tag required properties any more that season.

On the other hand there is Bong. At Bong, you buy your daily tag when you enter the property and have to tag either hens or roosters. But you could in theory hunt Bong every day of the season if you wanted to. The only limit is the daily 2 bird limit.

is that the only place you can get the hen tags for the areas that you don't buy your daily tag, or can you get them separately? the only place i have heard of getting them is when you buy a conservation patron license.

does Bong fill up every morning?
is there still a waiting line to get in most days?
is it still the wild west like it was years ago?

Yes, yes, and Yes. Its not bad if you can get away from the crowds. Weekends are bad and I've been turned away as they fill up. Some awefully bad shooting there too. A couple of times a year, somebody flushes a bird that flies along the old airstrip and multiple different groups of guys will all poke at it as it goes by.:eek:

With my flusher who hunts close, I can't compete with the pointer guys in the big open fields, so I will seek out the thicker tougher cover and hunt that. Less guys and usually I do okay there.

Still lots of "white and blue" license plates there every day too.

hey now, Im S of the border :D Born and raised in West Bend though.
are those Goldens youre hunting with?

Well if you were born and raised here, I guess you get some slack. ;) I did here a real good Illinois joke the other night but its not appropriate to post here.

Yes my pups are goldens. One is semi retired the other just turned 3.
