Here's a couple photos of a Blue Picardy Spaniel.

Very interesting and fine looking dog!

Yes, nothing inspires me like good dogs and shotguns! I carried a customized 12 gauge OU on the MN opener behind my 12 year old GWP and 7 year old DD. This weekend I'll grab one of my 16 ga. SxS's for the WI opener. (Same dogs of course!) I'll go back to the 12 OU for the IA opener, with a 12 semi-auto in the truck for a backup. A little later in the season I'll trot out an old Belgian 16 ga. OU for some of the local state land birds.

I get great enjoyment from having a few nice shotguns to take out after the birds, nothing extremely expensive, but nice enough and all dialed-in and well practiced with during the off season.

Back to dogs, when my 12 year old passes on I'll be adding another puppy, either another GWP or DD.

It's off to ND in two weeks with my older son, his first hunt in 16 years. This will give me the opportunity to bring along more of my gun vault occupants. For my son he can choose between a Beretta 391 12ga. or a Remington 1100 16ga. For myself I will use a Benelli Super Sport or a Remington Model 58 16ga. My 6 year old GWP is in her prime and the question is will she need a replacement soon. My wife says no more puppies, so I guess I will be getting a finished dog at some point. I am hoping to retire in the next couple of years. That will allow me more time to get more hunting and dog training. Good fun in any case and I enjoy the conversations of this forum. Good luck to all this season. Paul

Nope, I'm not a gun collector. If I don't use them they are gone. Still have a few I hope to use yet. But I do have one I'd like to sell. It's a Winchester 9422 XTR that I bought new in 1977 or 1978. Looks like the day I took it out of the box. Probably less than 20 shells ever fired through it. Think I'll throw it out on the Classifieds and see if there is any interest.

George, I guess I could fit three dogs in my Cab. :)
By the way, my 2 year old Woody is a hunting and pointing machine.
Also on the downed birds in a flash, no cripple will get away from Woody.:)

I need to get out to MT next year with you. Woody and Elle could really cover the ground.

BTW, I've contacted a Blue Picardy owner in Calgary and he will be calling me in the near future. He is working with a breeder in the Calgary area. I'm not interested in a dog at this time. Just trying to learn more about the breed in case I would have to replace a dog some time down the road.

Cal will verify.
I shot only the Sharptails that Woody pointed perfectly.
There were dozens and dozens of them in the area mostly wild though.
I left them for seed.

Zeb, keep on hunting! Once you quit, it will be hard to go back.
I plan on hunting up until I keel over.
I am a "Bakers" dozen years younger than you, but time still seems to be catching up with me. I feel the aches and pains a lot more than I used to.
It seems just like a couple of years ago that I first started hunting, but it's been over 40. You are an inspiration to me that I still have time to enjoy what I love most.

I'm now 56 and my pup Max is 3-1/2. My wife of 30 years tells me he will be my last dog. I'm keeping quiet for now, but I can't see working to retirement, finally having the time to recreate and not having a good gun dog. This is going to be one argument I'll win. No way I'm ending the string with Max.

My first look at the Blue Picardy was that it was related to the Setter. The second picture above is all setter and the articles describe a dog that is very similar to my English, but a little smaller.

The setters I've had are/were all close working gun dogs. Not the big running field trial varieties. Max weighs 71-72 pounds. His work on birds can be very "feline" which was a descriptive used in one of the articles linked above. This is especially so on woodcock where during migration there's a lot of scent on the ground. They'll point in more of a crouching position. On grouse and pheasants where the bird may be a ways out and they're getting scent on the wind they'll stand taller. Hunting in the WI grouse and woodcock woods I can tell the difference in point and approach accordingly.

Oh you will have at least one more dog. I got my last dog when I was 62. The wife told me that if I was going to get another dog that I best hurry up. She didn't want the dog to out live me!! :D

The Blue Picardy Spaniel is a cross of the French Spaniel, the English Setter (Blue Belton) and the Gordon Setter.

Hey George, looks like an interesting breed/dog.

Bought my current dog Max at 72 young years and still going strong! However, one has to wonder as I approach 80 - 3 short years. As long as the legs hold up I guess I'll be in the field with the rest of the youngsters.
