Gun safes

Bought one today

Just too many break in's these days, not to mention the risk of a fire. My son is in the security business. He installed a alarm system about a year ago.

I swung the best I could afford at this time. 30 gun, 30Min fire rating of 1400 degree's. Rarely is there nobody home at our house. We have livestock and a kennel. Somebody is always here but once in a while for a few hours nobody is home but our dogs to watch things but again, that's rare.

How many of you have invested in a gun safe?
 
I have had one for years, but for an add'l reason slightly different from yours. I am a minister & have spent a huge part of my life working with juvenile delinquents & at-risk kids and entertaining all sorts of company. Our house is like a train station & not all of the visitors are country boys or hunters like me. Can't afford for ANYONE to accidentally get ahold of a gun who doesn't know the first thing about handling or respecting one - way too much liability!

The days I grew up in when everybody had a show-off glass & wood gun cabinet in the house and a two-gun rack at least half-occupied in the back window of the pick-up with the side windows rolled down in the parking lot while you ran in the store are long gone...

No kidding are those days gone. I always liked to take two three guns along in the truck when hunting. I would switch guns from time to time so I got a chance to use different ones. We also would sometimes leave the dog in the truck well jumping ducks(then come back and get the dog to get our ducks out) or just as a extra so we could switch to a fresh dog.

Not anymore, the risk of someone smashing out the window and taking the guns or dog are too great.

Kudos to you for trying to straighten some of those kids out. It's a huge undertaking and risk to even put your family in that situation. I commend you for having hope.

Getting this safe will be a huge load off my mind. Although I think I'm being somewhat cheated. I spend a lot of time when watching outdoor programs with my gun cabinet doors open admiring my guns. Now, it just won't be the same, having them locked away in a safe with no glass windows or ease of access. Sad that today's society and values has forced our hand.

I hate that I can't have my guns laying around for my viewing pleasure. I remember going with my father to friends house the men would be down stairs always by the gun rack. Sometimes they would pull them out for me to look at and I got to hear the stories that would follow about hunting trips and what not. Good Times.
Now a days it's a thrill to see a person that has forgot to put a gun away.
 
I hope you took the time to bolt it down and to the adjacent walls. Some lowlife almost got mine one day. A few bolts saved my bacon.

Now I put a sign on the outside:

WARNING Black Powder inside. Use of a torch will send you to Hell- right where you belong.
 
One of the most impressive sights that still lingers in my mind like a fine aroma was visiting a man's house down the street from my uncle in an upper-crust neighborhood in Houston, TX with a couple of my cousins. The guy (I never actually saw or met him/he was never home when we went) had a HUGE den/bar with a custom-built non-stop contiguous glass gun case around the entire paremiter of the room - and every single slot full to the hilt with hundreds of guns (collectibles, usables, & some very fancy/expensive ones mixed in indeed)...I always dreamed of a set-up like that some day when I grew up and became rich (Ha-Ha)! Then again, I remember thinking even then - WOW, if the wrong person ever finds this out!!! :eek:

Have awesome much more down-to-earth country boy memories of friends, family members, & neighbors in farmhouses & double-wides with the typical wood/glass gun cabinet filled with a few hunting guns & sometimes a very interesting/antiquated heirloom gun or two with a real story behind it. Some of my adult "heroes" would get em' out for us to handle & look at from time to time while they held us spellbound with the kind of stories that young boys just learning to hunt like to hear! :thumbsup:

Once you get used to it, the safe ain't so bad - my boys and I still pull out the toys & play with em' in the house anytime we want - it just wouldn't look right anyway for a Barrett 50 cal, a bunch of AR's, a barrell full of semi-auto handguns & a S&W 500 to be laying around or hanging on the wall - they ain't purty like the rest of the hunting guns! Makes the wrong kind of city-folk shiver... :D

P.S. I still keep the right handpiece & a couple high-capacity mags handy in totally separate places in a way that ONLY I can lock-&-load in a heartbeat even in total darkness for suddenly unexpected/unwelcome visitors! :)

A minister with that kind of hardware...if you were closer and had a church you spoke/practiced at. I would defiantly be attending. 500? I have one too and a carry permit. I also keep well armed at all times. We think a lot a like.

@onpoint - LOL, the "black guns" are mostly my sons' they are the gun-collectors & rifle-range nuts! I'm still ever the hunter at heart - three shots in the pie plate or one box at the sporting clay range & show me something with fur or feathers! Guess who still comes home with the most bacon... ;)

I do wanna take an elk with the 500 though, & can't wait to light up a herd of hogs next time I visit back home in TX with my new AR & night-vision scope! :thumbsup:

I do try to keep my ministerly duties & firearms habits a bit seperate... :D
 
I want to shoot a Bison with my 500. I have a place picked out in Custer SD where I'm going to book the hunt sooner or later. I'm more of a hunter traditional gun myself. i have had black guns. Mostly H-BAR AR-15"s. I'm into O/U bird guns now.
 
I don't know when your bison hunt is, but the Custer Park buffalo roundup is coming up soon if you're in the vacinity. It is quite a show!

I had my guns in a nice pretty gun case my wifes brothers all had a part in making in three year in school- nice glass front- pretty

then I got robbed

I went to Cabelas and bought a Sentry Safe-
on the front of my house in a 14X16 picture frame I had in big letters
"THIEVES, ROBBERS, TRESPASSERS, BEWARE, THIS PROPERTY IS BOOBY TRAPED, ENTER AT YOUR OWN RISK"

police cracked up over it, it was the talk of our small town, they had a picture at city hall-

no door to door sales people-

to punk druggies - I said wait- brought out my sawed off shotgun- showed it and explained how I had a trip wire set up- I also explained I had two bear traps set in the back yard- they or their freinds were welcome to come snooping arround
 
sort of- I had a pretty good high profile lawer- he said it would cost me plenty but he could get me off

what was sort of funny- three nuts climbed the fence looked in the window- and took my mountain bike in the yard- sometimes a privacy fence it what criminals like- neighbor said he saw and heard them thru a hole- nobody ever asked me to take the sign down- had it up for over a year- sometimes folks would drive by- back up- stare

one time- 5 hoodlums honked and stopped on the street- hollered and I opened the door- one says what are you going to do it we bring an AK47

got my sawed off and stood by the door- show me the gun I can get all 5 of you from here

my kids called me crazy- I liked that- wanted everybody to think a crazy person lived there- still crack up over it all

I have made it a point to make the scumbags think I'm nuts in my neighborhood. I make it a point to stop at one neighbors place where a couple hang around with my 500 Smith & Wesson laying on the passenger seat. They get nervous as all get out. That's what I want
 
good for you-

amazing when word gets arround that a crazy is ready to dish it out the punks and druggies think of easier prey

all the security and cameras aren't as good as word that someone isn't afraid and is ready and willing

all this concealed carry is fine- but nothing quite matches a gun in hand or on the hip in view-

in our town you could carry a pistol loaded on your hip in sight-
I did sometimes- specially when walking my dogs-

When my wife and I had neighbors prior to moving to the country, most thought we were people not to be messing with. She worked mostly nights, but some days, coming and going a lot. She traded a couple vehicles, and then got a job at the university and was driving rental cars a lot for traveling. I meanwhile was always carrying in armloads of guns from various hunting trips, and big duffel bags.

The guy a couple doors down finally couldn't take it anymore, stopped and asked her "what is it you all do anyways, you've always got different cars, always carrying duffel bags, every few days you're carrying in or out 3 or 4 different guns, are you up to something illegal?" She explained, and I think he approved.
