GSP questions

I know nothing about the lines or names to look for when looking at GSP litters... If a guy was looking for a smaller dog (40 lbs.) with high drive and a solid natural point... what are the names in the pedigree to look for. Dog will be used for pheasant mainly, but we do see a fair amount of quail too.

Hustler, Rusty, Slick and Clown are old dog lines that are well known and frequently argued about, fwiw.

A 40 lb. GSP is certainly not the norm but there are some around. I knew a guy a number of years ago that had about a 40 lb. female GSP and was running her in NSTRA. Dynomite little dog. My guess is that you will probbly need to check with several GSP breeders and see if they have a smaller dog or know who might have one. To get a dog that size you will more than likely end up with a female. Where are you located?

We had several rawhide dogs. Everyone of them was a bird hunting machine that would never quit.

I never worried about size much but my last female I got is the biggest gsp I have owned. Not overly huge but big framed and big boned for a female. I noticed when she was young she would tire a little easier than my other dogs and you could hear the difference in the way she sounded going across the ground. At 2 yrs old she blew out both TCLs. An injury I've never dealt with in my life of being around bird dogs. I had every intention of breeding her when she was young as she is a striking female but won't now because of the leg issues and her size.

You might find a 40lb GSP but why try? There are 40lb breeds that will do everything a GSP will do and sometimes better.
Braque Francais and Brittany come to mind and I am sure there are others as well.

There are plenty of 40 pound female gsp. If that is you want just look /talk to different breeders and they will point you that way. They may bad mouth those dogs but if health clearances are good don't worry about other's opinions.
