Graham Co. Tom in the Bag

Got rained out opening morning for spring turkey. In the afternoon I saw some in corn stalks where they can be snuck up on from lower ground. Got in a good position and called but couldn't get the big tom in view to move within range. Then some hens got suspicious and they moved away. I flanked them on the lower ground while it began pouring rain. I stayed in the hunt and was about to pop my head up to see where they were when they gobbled -- right above me! Then I saw their heads silhouetted against the sky through the grass and weeds 15 feet away. I let the tallest one have it. He was a 25 pounder with a 6" beard and one inch solid black spurs. At such short range not a single piece of shot hit his breast. What a fun hunt.

nice job! We had a nice chance yesterday am,but the old boy lived another day.. Here in SEK,we have strip pits, which the turkeys love, this tom wouldn't come out for nothing. At one time,he was within 15 yds of the boys, but we couldn't see him,but was he ever booming and spitting..After about 10 mins of soft purrs and clucks,he finally walked out, silent of course about 30 yds away,I told my son to shoot, but I should of waited, that was a little to far for a 20 ga..All well,we had a blast anyway and found some morels.Back at it again today.Good luck to all.

Sounds like you had a good hunt! Three out of five of us filled our tags including a father and son double on jakes. We were there in Graham county last Friday through Sunday. I was impressed with the number of turkeys and the nonstop pheasant crowing. I'm sure we will be back up there in November! Beautiful country and friendly people

I heard lots of crowing too. In fact, pheasants crowed back to my calls more than turkeys gobbled back.

Hey,maybe your on to something.Next season.as everyone lines up for the first drive, get your slate call out and yelp real loud.use it as a locater.LOL One year, our local guy was useing a hawk call, when we would have them birds corraled up,he would blow on this call, sure enough,it actually worked a couple of times.

The hawk call was to keep the pheasants on the ground in hiding as the hunters closed in I assume. I've heard that works.
