got my dog

Got a lead on a male GSP that was caught in the middle of a nasty divorce, niether side wanted the other to have him so long story short i gave each party half of the asking price and i got the papers, both parents are great hunters and this dog seems to have it in him, very obediant and rreally good with kids, he is 17 weeks old, not the rescue dog i was looking for but it is in a way, at least he wont be caught in the middle of warring factions. Any tips for getting him started, video, books ect? he will find some wings i have hidden but only about 50% of the time

Socialize him with yourself first and foremost. After this try and take him for free runs if possible just to get him used to different cover. If you have the resources to take him to a bird farm or preserve of sorts let him go have fun and see what his natural abilities are. The wing is good but not for long since it will teach sight hunting and what not. Any way you can challenge his nose with either birds or treats will benefit him greatly. I would really focus on building a lasting bond with him first before pushing him into the bird dog you want him to be. I am sure others will post good tips as well. Congrats on the new dog and to hopefully a long lasting hunting relationship between the two of you.

I agree with HUNTIN4FUN just socialize with your pup as much as you can that will do wonders for your bond and make him hunt extremely hard for ya. My grandpa raised GSP for 30 years and as far as training them it really doesn't take all that much they're extremely intellegent dogs and pick up on things very quickly! Good luck and have fun with the new edition!

when i got my GSP at 3 months old... many suggestions i got were this.. hes a pup.. let him play and have fun, however train him to sit, lay down and whatever for a normal dog should learn. when 7 to 9 months come along, get heavy with training your dog. not to say you cant train your dog to be a gun dog starting at 7mo old. but to train the basics as he grows up.. when i got mine, i let him roam around while i walk through a shelterbelt at my farm house bc at first he was scared of anything that shot up from the ground... now he got used to it and by the time he was 5-7 months old... he could find them. you cant train him to point. . that comes to him in his blood. some do it right away some dont do it for example, some didnt point til they were a year old.. but start on WHOA and of course hook a wing to a fishing pole and throw it out and let him do his thing. create a trail for him to find it and lock.

dont rush your pup.. he needs to know youre the leader and listens to your commands before you could train him for what you want him to do. Get a check cord is the first thing to get for training WHOA.

you can find very good resources at www.shorthairs.net for GSPs. im a memeber of that forum and has very good info on GSP dogs. its a nation wide forum and has sections of training and hunting..

this isnt a HUNTING forum to make that clear.. its designed for GSP dogs.

Congrats on the new dog. Remember he is still a baby and treat him as such. Take it slow and let him learn at his puppies pace. To much pressure at his age is not good. It should fun and games now but games he can learn a few basic commands like come/here and easy ones like that. I have not trained a dog in 10 years so the books and stuff now are all new to me. But I have trained my share in my lifetime........Bob

Blitz is 16 weeks old and fit just like a puzzle piece, doesnt run away, stays prety close, comes when i call him and is well on his way to house broken , he is very smart and i think will be a very good adition to my family, he is always laying on me or looking for me, good with the kids and very gentle. and fecher a dummy a few times today, we have geese in the field so i will se what he thinks of those.

I was just thinking of what you posted. From the sound of the way they were battling. How do you know that poor pup could not have ended up in a Rescue? Yes, you did a good job, Congrats again for getting the pup and giving him a good home. Him laying his head or whatever on you is his way of bonding, reach down and pet him now and then. Tell him he is "good dog" while petting to help the bonding process along.......Bob

first of all congrats on your new pup, enjoy him right now hunting season is several months away plenty of time to train, the book i found to help me was by joan bailey i think the title "was how to help gundogs train themselves" it was very helpful for me since i had never trained a dog before it broke it down in simple ways to get an accomplished and well trained dog.

If you go to the website I mentioned above.... and find the Training section, theres LOT of info about training books or even videos too. that is a Main GSP website and a world wide access with many many members across the nation that have trial dogs to serious hunting dogs... they will tell you whats teh best video or book for your dog.

if you didnt see it, heres the link again.
