Goodbye Good Dog, Hello Pup

Gus the Brittany succumbed to cancer after bravely enduring it for about a year. He died peacefully at home, thankfully avoiding a last trip to the vet. Butch the Brit pup took it all very well, respectfully sniffing Gus in his final stillness.

Gus came out of rescue in '07 at about nine months of age. Little was known about him. His Ohio foster master, however, was a field trialist with chukars on hand. We took three birds to his cousin's farm to test Gus. Ten hunting seasons and happy years of faithful companionship followed.

With Gus gone, Butch the pup got an immediate promotion to Reserve Big Dog. At six months he still needs a watchful eye and crate time, but he has done well with his new privileges. I will take him to a bird ranch later this winter for his first time on birds.

All is well.

Sorry to hear about Gus. Always tough losing one of our companions. How is that new pup doing you got from Kristy Goodall? He should be a good one.

Still very much a pup as you would expect at six months.

First in your house, then by your side, finally--in your heart; losing a partner who doesn't criticize and thinks you're wonderful is a terrible loss. My condolences. As I've said before: your dog is a gift which you strive to deserve.

Best of luck with the pup. It will be great...just different.
