Just needed to share some thoughts after another day out there hoofin' it in Phillips County.
Yeah, the ultimate goal is to be able to bring that rooster, or for some of you pros roosters home with you. For us there will not be a pheasant on the Thanksgiving table this year, HOWEVER...
I took my English Setter out for his first "hunt" and can I tell you how awesome it was to see my dog do what he was bred to do. No, we didn't have any flushes at all, but he honed on a field dress pile and had a blast!!! We used a check cord because he is still in training, but when I finally had the nerve to drop it, he recalled beautifully, and was probably the happiest I have ever seen him. Good for the soul!
You drive out of suburbia and all the crap you deal with day to day goes away. You are not on anyone's schedule, you're not on any established trail, you're out there doing what you enjoy, and I have the privilege of huckin' it out there with my husband. Good for the soul!
You get home and your son and daughter share with you their favorite hunting trips and why. So far only my son has seen his daddy get his bag limit for grouse, but you want to know what he loved the most....army crawling through a stand of junipers . Daughter loved when it was just us as a family trekking at 10,000 ft for grouse....she enjoys the snacks and being with family. Good for the soul!
So I'm pleasantly tired after walking a few miles and a couple of glasses of wine. Griffin (the English Setter) is pleasantly curled up against me on the chair. My kids are glad to have us home, and the hubby has had a couple of beers and is proud of his half way trained hunting dog.
I guess that I always want to keep it real, and know that even if we don't achieve the ultimate goal. HUNTING IS GOOD FOR THE SOUL!!!!!
Good Night!
