Gettin Schooled in Sodak

So far they are getting the best of us. Hunted in Platte area and saw very few birds, then headed north. Found a few more birds, but very few on public. Ended up getting a couple and missed a good chance at a sharptail, it just had to flush while I was crawling underneath a fence. Now in Gettysburg, ready to head out again in the morning and we will see what happens. It has been warmer here than it was in AR and we have had more snow - about 8 inches - than yall, weird. Looking forward to tomorrow and hope we find a little more.

The walkin on 175rd and 314th had good cover and held a lot of WILD birds, mostly in the cat tails. When we where there it was cold and snowny, you should be able to get on the west side of the drainage ( cat tails) we saw birds in the fields beyond. We didn't get to those because of the snow and Deer Hunters. Good Luck, we left you plenty of birds :) . It's tough driving from walkin to walkin trying to find a good plot, hope this helps.

One other thing, apparently the word license in the Arkansas dialect sounds something like the word sunglasses. Twice we went in, asked for hunting licenses and were directed to the sunglass rack. The lady at the store we got supper tonight asked what part of the south we were from, is it that obvious?

Thanks hayduke, yes it is hard to determine where to hunt, lot of them look the same and you always want to see one more. Thanks for the tip and will give it a try.

I

Yes sir. I have hunted with a lot of southeners and learned how to translate fairly well. Most are darn good shots and I enjoy their company.

Thanks for the compliment on southerners Uncle Buck. Got a couple more today, but same story, lots of hens on public but very few roosters. It seems my Brit is trailing them but can never pin them down, three or four days a year just does not give her enough experience. We have seen lots of birds but they are in big groups, but with a mild winter and a good spring it should be good next year. We have enjoyed all the deer, including a couple of huge bucks, jackrabbits, eagles and just the scenery in general, thanks for sharing.

Gonna start heading back east in the morning and make a few stops on the way.

Ive been in your shoes. Ive never come close to a limit in SD. Its always a different reason....
Its gets deflating as everyone has these dreams of seeing the skies filled with birds. Limits everyday, only to leave 5 days later with one or two birds a day. (at best)

Hey a guy can still dream...

If you don't get a limit it ain't for lack of birds, today it was poor shooting in my case.

The honest reports are appreciated. I was under the impression that just crossing the border into South Dakota means skies darkened by clouds of ringnecks and the ground littered waist-deep with pheasant meat.

We hunted Lyman Co yesterday. Highest bird numbers in state according to survey done by the rural mail carriers. Two guys, two boys one dog. Killer private milo strips. We saw thousands (really) of birds in the adjoining guy's CRP. We got three. While it's true the numbers of birds seen can be staggering, doesn't mean your going to get them without an army of men. Especially two months into the season. They are flushing 75 yards away at the sound of a car door.

Its 4:00 am and back home in AR, drove all day and got back just in time to head to the woods to try to kill a few mallards - my buddies have been killing them every day since I have been gone.

Didn't kill many phez in SD, but had a great trip, once again I really enjoy everything about SD, the scenery, the wildlife, the people - thanks again for sharing. Will be back next year, I have five more days on my license.

Will try to post a little more later, but got to head to the duck woods, its clear skies, with a 10 mph south wind - will be a good day, whether we kill ducks or not.
