German Wirehaired Pointers vs other pointing breeds??

Sounds like you've made up your mind. They are an amazing breed. Yes, they are quirky. Yes, they like fur. I've owned most breeds. Setters and Britts, etc. they have a certain expression when they look at you. It's more of a I love you look. But Wires have certain look in their eyes. Actually more than one. You'll see what I mean. Good luck and keep us posted.
Thank you!

I recently adopted a 5 year old Shorthair who is the sweetest loving dog. She’s never hunted but shows strong hunting instincts and is very good on recall. I will give her a chance to hunt this fall. I recently had to put down my Brittany who was an excellent hunter and also have hunted with Springers over 3 decades. It seems that pointing dogs have a more natural instinct. My Springers were hit and miss. 3 good hunters, one moderate, and one poor. I trained all dogs my self, mostly giving them preseason access to wild birds. That’s not so easy anymore. Wild birds are getting harder to come by eac year. 20 years ago I could run dogs in the metro lake areas and find pheasants.

I’m glad to hear that the instincts are there! I think by doing the research on a good breeder with good genetics the hunting aspect just needs to be introduced on what you want them to hunt! I am hoping that I will be able to get the pup on plenty of wild birds as well as pigeons to help reinforce that instinct! Thanks for the reply!

Hey guys,

Lifetime lab guy thinking about possibly getting into the pointing world. I’m looking for everyone’s opinions on GWP‘S….. How’s the drive, temperament, and are they good family dogs as I have young children that I am sure will want to use them like the monkey bars at a playground. Are they able to hunt all weather like a lab? This is one of the reasons I was looking into them since I enjoy waterfall hunting as well. Is this breed known for any later in life health issues?

For any of you guys that switched from labs to pointers, what are some tips/tricks when it comes to letting the dog roam in the field rather than work close by. My current lab works close and tight which is nice but for Montana prairies it’s nice to have the dog cover most of the ground.

Also, any suggestions of breeders that you would recommend?

Appreciate any feedback!
Lifetime lab guy here too. Got a pointing lab. Great choice

I would bet Erics dogs are on a two year min waiting list as popular as he is right now and rightly so. I have both drahts and GWPs. If you get serious about them let me know where your at and I can give you some names of good kennels. I was at a NAVHDA chuckar challenge yesterday with a plethera of dog breeds and the top two places in puppy and open class were all GWPs. The poodlepointers are really coming along too though.

I’ve yet to reach out to Eric yet but I’m still at least a year out before I can give the dog the required training and attention it will need! I’m in NW Montana and have been in contact with Silver Buckle Kennels out of Kalispell to get some exposure to the breed itself to get myself familiar with them before making a purchase. If you have a recommendation of breeders up this way feel free to post them or send them via a message!

As I mentioned earlier Treborwolf was had some of the best upland wires get on the website and read some of bob West's breeding philosophy. They are over in Idaho. I talked to Bob back when I trained a couple for NAVDA. He really new what he was talking about. My do was a pup from a stud from there. She was quit a dog.
