Do you guys that have the astro use a holster or the factory carabiner thing?

i haven't opened the box yet and cannot until friday morning when St. Nick actually brings me the collar.

does it come with anything that will work for hooking it to my vest?

Garmin holster

I do not have a carrier for the Garmin. I have a lanyard attached to the unit and a quick clip on the lanyard. The clip is attached to a ring on my hunting jacket or vest. I drop the Garmin in a pocket. I can hear the beep should the dog stop. I feel comfortable with this arrangement but am open to other suggestions that could be better.
I believe it had a lanyard

Did it come with a lanyard or did you buy it separately?

I have a strap vest, and have it in a holster that is mounted on the left shoulder strap.

Works great that way. I got the holster on the WingWorks site.

holy moses look at gps outfitters if you look under gps cases and clips they have one I like .if you get one the ultimate gps case is what I have. By the way I had a good time hunting with your dad.

that is kind of the way i was thinking of going, although the thought of having it in my pocket out of sight is nice too. i am worried that i will be looking at the darned thing too much LOL!

thanks for the tip. will head over and check out what they have.

dad had a blast hunting with you guys as he always does. i was sort of kicking myself in the rear for not buying a tag since i hate the thought of him hunting alone, so i was very pleased when he called and said that he hooked up with you guys. means a lot.

Check out Wingworks, I believe they make a universal one for their vest but can be attached to anything with the brass snap

If you are still looking for a holster, give me a PM. I can make you a custom holster to meet exactly what your needs are. We can add clips, slots, pouches, what ever you need.
I have a small, "garage" hobby business making stuff out of leather.
Holsters, belts, whatever.

Just my opinion - but the last thing I want to be looking at while I am afield is something in my hand. I want my eyes up and foward, sweeping what's ahead and looking toward the sound of the bell on my dog's collar if I can't see him.

I will keep that in mind. I am going to get the lanyard and try that first, but if decided to go the way of a leather holster, I will let you know.

That is where I am right now too. If you read my other thread, I talk about how I do not think this will free me of the evil beeper or bell. The piece of mind is nice though, especially when o think of grouse hunting in the big woods next season.

Simply keep in my vest. Best tool ever invented for those hunting with a point dog.

Finding dogs in heavy cover is easy now. Do not have to find them exactly, but as you ease in the bird(s) will usually break.

Stealth. Wow.

tip: batteries in the receiver can go quickly (some things you do to converve battery life make quick viewing a little more difficult). Keep spare AAs in the truck.

Signal (collar to receiver) can have issues in the big woods. September full forest cover can be an issue - intermittent. Pines and balsams seem to be the worse even if you are on an edge.

The GPS to satellite "connection" will also be problematic the more you venture towards old growth. Guess it is a queue to change cover type. :)

If you are hunting new stands of clear cuts the signal is unobstructed.

No problem Moses!
I'm a bell guy. I use the smallest cow bell from Tractor supply. It has a nice pleasant tone compared to most commerical "dog bells". Plus they are very sturdy. I have my had my hard running english setter wear out the clanger on anything less.
I wear electronic ear muffs and the bell stands out nicely. (also keeps ears warm!)

I love mine and just keep it in my hunting vest pocket. I hunt heavy cover, CRP, hedge rows, cat tails etc. and many times I can't see my dogs even if they're 30 yards away. The Garmin is a great tool.
