Hi everyone!

I typically hunt white tail, so I'm pretty new to the whole pheasant hunting thing.

Can you give me a glimpse as to what keeps you coming back to hunting pheasant instead of something else like deer or other small game? What's the draw for you? Just looking for a bit of understanding before I potentially dive in myself.

I'm all in for dogs that point, but there will be plenty who disagree. Hunting birds without dogs, is just, well... I'm at a loss for words to describe.

A few years ago I lost my 5 year old Setter, Major, in the spring. Great dog. That fall I was totally lost. First time in my life I was without a dog during bird season. I went to SD with friends and it was frustrating having to walk the edges or post all the time, the entire time missing my dog. My wife says the current Setter, Max, is our last. His life expectancy takes me to retirement and she wants to be unencumbered and free to travel, etc.. That discussion is NOT over. I have another 7 years to work on that.

Wow..you should remind her that it IS possible to travel with a dog. There are places that will allow you to bring your best friend with you. Otherwise, there are always doggie daycares. There are lots of friendly people who will even send you pictures and updates about your best friend while you are away. Don't give up.

Stuart, welcome from South Dakota. I am an avid whitetail and pheasant hunter. Fair Chase of course. I hunt both because they both keep handing me my ass every season. Which of course keeps me coming back.

By the way, since you are out there in DC, can you please work on getting some more CRP acres in the farmbill.

I can try, I'm still very new to the area and I get lost very easily. Damn DC is so hard to navigate.

I do most of my upland hunting on the high plains of western Kansas. Nothing much else makes me happier than trekking the big fields out there in the fall and winter with my Brittany casting about, getting birdy, locking on point, and the challenging shot on the bird. The big horizons of that open country settle the mind. It looks boring driving through it on an interstate, but it comes alive and reveals its beauty while afoot. If you like dogs, you will never have a greater appreciation of a dog than when it hunts for you. Upland birds are great eating too.

That rules out my theory. I thought maybe you have been in DC for eight years and soon would have a lot of time on your hands.

BritChaser: that sounds fantastic. Making me yearn for the same.

Crossing Shot: Ugh..I fear that had I lived here 8 years I would STILL be lost. Driving in DC is a MISERY.
