Free Shells on the Ground

Found four shotgun shells on the ground. One was 2 3/4" no. 6; one a 3" no. 5; and two Fiocchi 2 3/4" no. 6s. In the next field I put the no brand no. 6 in the bottom barrel and the 3 incher in the top barrel and doubled with them on the first flush -- at no cost!

Haven't had a double or even the opportunity for a double all year. Left shells in the field a few years ago. A broken sears pin on a Citori caused an accidental discharge. End result, my son in law blew off half of my forearm. In the resulting panic we ejected the shells in our guns and left them in the field. Not sure where you found yours but if they were the ones I left I'm glad they went to good use.

I'm not too sure I would put any shells I found on public ground in my gun.

I'm with onpoint on this one. I find them all the time but will not shoot them in my guns.

Wow sorry to hear about the accident. Not good, saftey can't be over stated.

You performed a public service by picking them up, in my opinion, and it might not occur to me to not shoot serviceable looking shells.

So far, I've never come across any live ones, but I often leave WIHAs with a rattling gamebag of found empties—beer cans and shotshells.

The shells were fresh, lying on the road maybe overnight at the longest. I found a rusty shell earlier in the season. I asked my hunting buddy who is a gunsmith and reloader what I should do with it. "Toss it down a badger hole," he said. Within minutes I came across a badger hole. ;)

What a tragedy. I hope you are making a good recovery. What state and county did your accident happen in?

Didn't mean to turn this into my sob story. I can still hunt. The blast removed the top half of my forearm. I had 4 surgeries where they transplanted muscle from my back and rebuilt my arm, repaired bones with screws and rods, and repaired the tendons that open your hand. End result is I have a working hand that allows me to safely hunt and fish. No complaints, could have been much worse. I now have the gun checked out and cleaned professionally every 3 years or couple hundred rounds.

Cheap hunting vests

I used to wear a cheap hunting vest, you would go a field with 15 shells, shot 5 but when you got back to the truck, I only had 3 left. I finally realized I could pay for a good vest just by the number of shells saved! I always wondered if anyone was finding those shells.

Up in SD this past fall I looked down on the ground and there was a pile of 3" 20 gauge 6's lying there. All unfired and appeared factory new. Might have been 8-10. My only thought was someone sat down or bent over and they spilled out of a pocket. Since I don't have a 20 gauge it was no decision to leave them there. But had I had a use for them it would have been a decision.

Had the same problem. My Filson strap vest solved the problem.
