I have a customer that wants to give a way a 1 1/2 year old female GSP. My question is how tough would it be to train the dog that old to hunt birds? I never messed with GSPs.Would anyone in the Cincinnati area want the dog? She is very friendly and built right.
thx bobby g

some people say at one year of age or even at 1.5 years of age is the perfect time to train your GSP to be a long term hunter. Remington, my past GSP, started his pointing after a year, he then really started to listen and fell in love with hunting. so yah you can train them at that age.

The only thing more expensive than a free GSP is a free horse. :)

That said, if you're serious about making the comitment to train and hunt with a bird dog, then a 1.5 YO GSP is a pretty darned good place to start.

Well I have her, picked her up Sunday. She is one pretty dog. built like a tank. Got her kenneled by herself to see how she behaves. She is also house broke.

consider yourself lucky that shes housebroke... my pup.. 8 weeks old GSP, whines at midnight, 2 am, 4 am needing her bathroom break.. or just wants out to play...

i cant even train mine til shes at least abit older... but you should be able hunt her this year.. just she needs to know youre the dominate leader and that she listens to you.

has she had any prior hunting experinces with the previous owner?

She can be taught to hunt. The main points of hunting is obedience. The hunting and pointing should be in her genes. All you have to do is get her into a birds and let those genes get woke up. The more birds she sees and works the better hunter she will become. But make sure her obedience perfect before she goes afield...........Bob

Hang on and enjoy the ride. Nothing like a well mannered bird dog.

I'm sensing a handle change in your future, "birddogbog" formerly known as "beaglebob." :D

Seriously, enjoy the pup. If you can, try to hook up with someone local that can show you the ins and outs.

Hello Bob.
I am giving her sometime to get to know me. I have a area set up for yard work. Figure I would train like I did with the English Pointers.

She had some yard work and they house trained her. He said they started formal training but never followed through with it. I just turned out 110 quail out of the surrogator (3 rd batch) and loaded another, hope they mix with the wild population:rolleyes: We got habitat and cover see what happens. She will have plenty of birds to train on.

At 1 1/2 , I would get busy as we usually start a little earlier, but in no way is she too old. I have rescued older GSP's that have turned out to be great hunters. I agree with the others...obediance first, but that doesn't mean forget training. I'm sure others do it differently, but she needs to learn; Here, heel, and whoa before you hunt her.

It's great that you have her; thanks for that! Sounds like you are set up with birds. You will know quickly on whether or not she's birdy. Once that first point happens then you are on your way. Find a trainer, a book, or give me or anybody on the forum a shout if you need any help.

GSP update: I had her out today on check cord, she did very good. Here command on the second time, and will heel. I turned her loose with e collar and only had to beep her to get her looking my way and she came to the here command and heel. We played this for about 10 minutes and she acted like she has been doing it forever.

You're halfway home...get 'whoa' in and you got yourself a partner. Congratulations and best of luck to you two...

Good Report, I like that she is learning fast. Now do as JMc said and teach "whoa". You will amazed at how times you use that command........Bob

I will get her out today and start with the whoa command. She must have had some training before I got her, it was just to darn easy or she is smarter than the English Pointers I have. We are going to SD in December on a Uguide hunt and I only have 3 broke dogs so getting her ready to make 4 is going to be a trick.

Update on Luca.
She had about 20 minutes training on here and heel, turns on a dime.
We did some live bird training today, 20 minutes and she was retrieving to hand. Kept tossing dead bird in thick cover and like a champ she was finding them and bring to hand.
Not to bad for a 1 1/2 old dog with no training, or that is what I was told. When done I yelled kennel she turned headed for the kennel and pushed the gate open and went to water.

well glad most of the training didnt require alot of work in your part... good job!

I dont think it is me, the dog is just smart.
bobby g:)

okay.. yah youre definately right there.. Sophia is now 10 weeks yesterday and shes pretty smart for a GSP....

when i got my first GSP dog, i was skeptic of it's hunting skills.. i was blown away.. if i had bet money on the dog's trait... id lose millions... but im glad i took a GSP from a breeder when he asked me to, was the best thing i have ever bought for a dog... now im on a GSP #2.. and I still vote GSP best hunting dog there can be...
