Fox Squirrels

I should have posted this here in the Colorado forum instead of main forum. Just wondering if any of you in your travels out in eastern Colorado have found any huntable populations of Fox Squirrels. I hunted them a lot as a kid in Nebraska. I would like to introduce my grandsons to the sport. Just having a hard time finding any. I live on the front range and hunt Turkeys, small game (pheasant) and deer out east but just can't seem to find Fox squirrels anywhere but in town?? Just a county or close to a town would be helpful. Thanks...

You won't find squirrel hunting here like you find in the mature hardwood forests in the east and midwest. Best public areas would be the river bottom SWAs from Greeley east along the Platte. Look for mature cottonwoods adjacent to corn and there will be a FEW around. I killed a couple one morning out of a duck blind along the Platte east of Greeley. You can find some Abert's squirrels in the foothills and mixed ponderosa pine/spruce forests, they are about the same size as a fox squirrel and are generally black or dark grey with tufted ears. Squirrel is some good eatin.

Trapped 21 so far in the back yard!!! Maybe I need the recipe???!!!! Bastards made a hole up by the chimney!! It was one I had trapped and released because I could not deal with her at the time!!! Took me 3 weeks and a special treat to get her to even look at the trap!!!! Trained her on 20 gauge finally!!! Been catching them all since!!!

Fox Squirls

Any of the public land on the south platt. There are plenty of places around Ft Morgan. a full or mod choke 20 ga or 410 work well. My first hunt was for squirls, we dat down and waited for one to move. My Grandfather went to the other side of the tree, so the squirl would turn to my side; I nailed him.
The fore and hind quarters are all that's worth keeping, but if you get a few, they frey up pretty good.
