Forum member SIGAV8R met me and my labs Cody and Logan at the Pepper Pod early Tuesday for a trip out I-76. Steve is new to pheasant hunting this year and has been avidly following the forum. He teamed up with GrouchOldDude earlier this year at Rocky Mountain Roosters. For a new bird hunter he impressed me with his safety conscious attitude and he could hunt with me anytime. He's also the proud owner of a rescued GSP back in his hometown of Dallas.
For a bluebird, fairly calm day, the birds were as wild as expected. Though not in the 100's like on many earlier days, we saw birds in every place we stopped, probably about 80 total. And the zillions of tracks we saw proved that the birds had been there--even if they were absent when we tromped through. We had only two flushes within range and unfortunately we missed.
On one of those shots about 20 birds flushed up just 60 yards further down the field in the direction we were heading. Rats!
Semi-retired 12 year old Cody appeared to hold up well through the day but after the 3 hour ride back was so stiff that my wife and I had to slide him out of his kennel by pulling out the pad with him on it. He's fine today.
I hope to get out several more times this season.
