Forum member SIGAV8R met me and my labs Cody and Logan at the Pepper Pod early Tuesday for a trip out I-76. Steve is new to pheasant hunting this year and has been avidly following the forum. He teamed up with GrouchOldDude earlier this year at Rocky Mountain Roosters. For a new bird hunter he impressed me with his safety conscious attitude and he could hunt with me anytime. He's also the proud owner of a rescued GSP back in his hometown of Dallas.

For a bluebird, fairly calm day, the birds were as wild as expected. Though not in the 100's like on many earlier days, we saw birds in every place we stopped, probably about 80 total. And the zillions of tracks we saw proved that the birds had been there--even if they were absent when we tromped through. We had only two flushes within range and unfortunately we missed.
On one of those shots about 20 birds flushed up just 60 yards further down the field in the direction we were heading. Rats!

Semi-retired 12 year old Cody appeared to hold up well through the day but after the 3 hour ride back was so stiff that my wife and I had to slide him out of his kennel by pulling out the pad with him on it. He's fine today.

I hope to get out several more times this season.

Well Cody was working hard the whole day! Thanks again POL for taking me out on some more wild birds. Hopefully we get to chase them once more before the season's done! I learned a lot yesterday and look forward to learning a bunch more from you! First may be how to shoot a little better and straighter. ;) I enjoyed hunting with you and the "kids". They were fun to follow and watch.

shotgun patern

POL didn't tell you it's not your shooting its your pattern. I have that problem every couple of times out. Just thought you should know. Sometimes mine has a huge void right in the middle. Could be the shells too. Drop em, Rob.

I do need to pattern the gun. POL helped me figure out I need to work on my aim a I was probably shooting high over the birds. Also learned a lot about habitat that I didn't quite understand as well before. As a newbie pheasant hunter I really appreciated members like POL and Grouchyolddude helpi me out and being my mentors.

An old guy who killed a lot of roosters once told me tail, head, bang.(my grandfather) That patern thing will be our secret, don't want everybody using that excuse you know.

Glad you had the opportunity to team up and hunt together. That is truly what life is about. Keep gettin after them wooster's!

Indeed. I encourage those of you w/o serious social disorders to meet up w/ someone on the site. Every experience I've had in doing so I appreciate and enjoyed. I could list each of the fine folks I've met from the site, but the list is getting pretty long:)

And hopefully the list keeps growing for us all!!

Thanks Bob! She's doing great! Little mischievous in the house, but otherwise really good! Can't thank you enough!
