First Wild Rooster - First Post - First Mouse In Bird

Hi All,

I'm been lurking for some time, but after today I have to post. Took the pup out to some WIAs and saw lots of hens, and of course a few roosters on private. Finally got a rooster near Haxtun that my Lab flushed out of a plum thicket. My first wild bird! I've shot quite a few pen raised birds and I've shot AT a bunch of wild birds, but have never connected until today.

Now the weirdness. I was field dressing the bird as I had a long drive home and I open the crop to expose a lot of corn AND a mouse! I've read that pheasants will eat mice and that it happens often in captivity, but man - what a strange thing to find. Definitely made me recoil when I pulled the mouse out.

Anyone else even find a mouse in their bird?

All in all - a great day!

Yep they will eat mice. Seen em chase down mice in the pen many times. They are all over it. They eat the carcase of other birds that die too. I would not want to drop dead in a bird pen. Mini t rex I call em.

Wow, on the mouse! I would have been surprised to have found a mouse! I believe it though, especially after seeing a video of guinea hens and a snake!

Nice job, and congrats!

That's a hecuva first post! Congrats on your first bird, we love hearing about that on this site. The mouse thing....first I've heard of it personally. I've never found anything but grain in them. Thanks for sharing and I wish you the best of luck on your next trip.

Cocolab awesome job!!! Be sure to pick up all your mess when cleaning birds in the field!! You want to be a good caretaker and you do not want others like me to see Rooster feathers in your spot!!! Way too easy of a Tell that let's one know there are birds there if you know what I mean!!! I know some drive to fields that have no birds to do that!!!:D:D Congrats again and thanks for sharing the pic's!!!!
