First Official Brood Sighting

Just visiting with the guy, that farms my ground, in church this morning and he said he saw a hen with a brood cross the road in front of him last week on hwy 281 just south of Armour. Said chicks could not have been more than a couple days old.

Heading out now to doing some mowing and weed maint and will see if I see any broods or nests.

This sighting does give some indication that nesting could be 3-4 weeks in advance of normal cycles which I think would be good. Most farmers have all their corn and beans in and the wheat is looking really good.

Just got a much needed shot of rain last night. Bout half inch. Temps were in 90's yesterday.

Have not seen any broods, but one of the dogs brought an egg (intact) up to the front porch. Prbably screws that nest but plenty of time to re-nest. I agree, hatch should be early particularly"downsouth" your way.
Well over inch in Lyons and the crick is back up.

2nd official brood sighting. Tonight in tractor mowing tree strips. Hated to do it but the sweet clover was twice as tall as new trees so it had to be done.

Brood of little guys that could not even fly yet. Moved 12 roosters and a couple dozen hens out of 1 mile of trees 5 rows wide.

Out of another half mile strip I moved 3 turkeys , 2 ducks and a few more pheasants. Kills me to have to mow them but if I did not NRCS would be on my case.

brood sightings

out in our native grass two days ago, seen a couple different hatches, by their size i'm guessing one group hatched around the 15th of may, and other ten or so days ago, getting some good size, at least they have a good chance of getting away from the hydroswings around the 15th of june.

First half of June looking good for Eastern South Dakota. Not much rain at all since the first of month, hi's in 80's, low's in 60's.

Average rain 3.57 inches for month and so far we have had .29 in June.

I'd call that ideal and a stark contrast to wet weather experienced this time last year.

More reports of brood sightings coming in but realistically it will be end of summer's Game and Fish Road Count survey that will tell the story.
