First hunt

Recently signed up on UPH and I have three days to hunt just before xmas. Will be driving to KC to see family for the holidays and I am thinking about driving to NC kansas for my first hunt. WHA and maybe Glenn Elder are possiblities. Are the WHA areas hard to find and I don't have any extra time to scout. Any suggestions on lodging and areas would be appreciated. It will be just me and my lab ( first time for her too.) Great forum so far thanks elton

Elton,

Do you have the Kansas Hunting Atlas that shows all of the WIHA maps? If not, have someone in your family get you one prior to your arrival. The Wal Mart stores in the KC area have them. The WIHA areas are not hard to find if you have the maps, but they will have been hunted pretty hard by the time you get here.

If you see some spots that you want to hunt, stop and ask. Given the time of the year and that it's just you and your dog, you'll probably have some success getting permission.

I'm not familiar enough with the area to be able to offer lodging advice. Good luck and enjoy your trip.

If you stay on 24 on the north side of hiway across from glen elder state park entrance and office is public hunting. (I think) yesterday 11 roosters were out sunning about 4 pm. The boys I know out there say the south side of lake has been good this year. Nice motel in beloit. like a best western or days inn type of place.

You can also download the wiha maps from the KDWP website. I would suggest getting the files they offer for google earth and look at the tracts in the area you are focusing on, it will help you eliminate a few of the tracts that are just pasture ground, etc. I you have a garmin they offer an overlay, which works good also.

I always hunt grass and thick stuff if I'm by myself, late season it seems like birds don't hold in row crops and will get up 100-300 yards ahead. Keep posting maybe someone will wanna meet up with ya and hunt with ya. We make a trip to that area at least once a season. Radar

There's a place right there you can rent trailer homes for like 30. night per person, I can't find it right now if I do I'll PM you.

Another place you may want to consider is the Wakefield/Milford Lake area. When I lived in Manhattan my buddies and I would hunt up there frequently. There's a lot of heavy cover that's surrounded by crops, excellent for quail - and it's usually good for a rooster or two. It does get hunted rather hard in the first few opening weeks though. The North side of the lake (North of Wakefield) has always offered the best ground, but there is some nice ground on the South end of the lake as well. You could easily spend an entire day hunting the lake property and surrounding walk-in areas. Please note that I have not been to that area yet this year. I do know of a grass patch that is kind of "hidden" though, and probably doesn't get hunted as much as the rest of the areas. I few years ago I pushed about 40 pheasant out of it.

Should you decide to head that way, you can lodge in Junction City or Clay Center. Also, should you decide to hunt any Wildlife area near a lake (Milford, Glen Elder, etc.), pick up a lake map at the visitor's center. You'll find it much easier to navigate around the lake areas using the lake map, rather than the walk-in map.

Good luck!

this is the best advice you will get.....private ground is always best.
