fires

As my wife and myself was going to get the emission test done on my diesel truck we noticed smoke bellowing out to the north of Colorado Springs, we turned on the radio and found out that there was a fire in the Black Forest area. We are now home and have the news on, several homes have burned to the ground, they said that a group of boy scouts had to leave the area due to the area they were in.
There is also a fire south west of the Royal Gorge area and they just said that there is another fire but I did not catch where they said where at.
They just said that the wind is blowing back into the fire which is good news.

West of me ,up in the west end of the park! Lightning started it Monday in a grassy area and with the winds today it blew it into the beetle kill. Heard of one by LaVeta pass as well!!!

Bleu,
Yeah I just heard about the fire west of you and that makes 4 different fires, the one by you, the one in Black forest here in the Springs, one at the Royal Gorge west of Canyon City and one in La Veta.
My shooting buddy is a mile short of the evacuation area right now.Need pastor John to pray for rain.

gonna see pastor john in a bit, gonna go train his mutt, or at least try too, will tell him that he is dropping the ball on his praying, probably been too busy building a barn for his mule. i'll get him moving on it, something gotta change

1fun37,
you are so right I just learned a friend has lost his house and a very close friend is in the pre evacuation area.
I am sure prayers would be greatly appreciated and do not forget the firefighters, paramedics and all the first responders out there.
Jim

its a real shame the state of the forest in Co. with all the beetle kill. little harvesting activity is only making these fires bigger and bigger.

Still really burning out of control here in the Springs, the La Veta fire is out and the Royal Gorge fire at last report I heard was 20% contained. The dry trees are like roman candles igniting, I think they said the fire here has consumed 10,000 acres, but I might be mistaken so don't quote me and I hope I am wrong and it is alot less.
They have tankers and helicoptors in the air now and I guess they are doing some good but we really need some moisture, almost no humidity to talk about and haven't had none for some time now.
If it stays like this no 4th of July fireworks and no fires in elk camp I am sure.
I was told by my neighbor that all charcoal fires( bbq) and campfires are prohibited. :(

Hippies don't want us harvesting anything in the forest.

And Easterners moving here need to accept that fire is a natural part of western forests and that we aren't suppose to have 300 tree's per acre. Took me a while to convince my wife (from PA) that what she see's as a pretty pine or P&J forest, I see as a unhealthy ecosystem which is basically a desert with shade

Not much beetle kill if any in Black Forrest. It is moving more on the ground then through the tree's. However by the pictures and video I have seen, there was little if any fire mitigation going on down there from the land owners! Grass and tree's right up to the porch!!! That doesn't bode well with a fast moving wind driven fire. I just hope everyone got out of the way and they will figure the other stuff out later. They are so scared to let the one up in the Park burn. It is in the beetle kill and I think they are really worried about stopping it at some point if they let it go. It could burn till the snow flies this fall if they let it. At one point it is going to just all go up. They do not seem to want to log it out in a serious fashion and they are just extending the likely hood of a massive full blown fire storm in the millions of acres of beetle kill trees. Maybe it won't happen is the position they are taking!!!!!

some good news, the fire has not progreesed to much, some on the evac and prevac individuals have returned home as it has been lifited for some.
we just got some rain so that will help.
I will be leaving Sunday to visit my dad in Missouri for Fathers day so will not be able to give updates while gone. Hopefully by then there will not be anything to update as all will be well.
Here is hoping.
