Fire reports?

How long does it take for the grass to grow back if they get adequate rain? I had one buddy out there that said if they get rain it will be good again this fall, I have a hard time believing that.

Growing up in Southeast Kansas, we'd burn off our native grass hay meadows about this time of year, and then be mowing/baling them for hay in late June/early July.

Different soil and different rainfall belt. This sand is a breed all of it's own. Mix in less than 20 inches of rain and you have problems holding the soil.

The 700 acres that burned adjacent to the south city limits of Dodge is in the sand. I drove by there the day after the fire was put out and there was only a few places that the soot was visible, mostly because of the sifting sand and the road ditches were beginning to fill with sifting sand looking like a picture of ditches and fences rows from the Dirty 30's.

Wind and low rainfall make it difficult to establish vegetation on the sand in this area. One reason strip farming became a practice of those trying to farm the sand was to reduce the wind erosion. Fortunately much of the sandy soils that had been farmed near me has been taken out of crop production and put into the CRP program.

What's the latest news? Are the fires out? Hoping for some good reports. Any moisture over the weekend? Someone say something.

We're dry. Going to heat up again. Fires are pretty much out. Folks are logging the damage and starting to rebuild. Fire units are repairing their units in case round 2 should occur. Good Samaritans are appearing from far and near. Though loss is burning in many Kansans' hearts, rebirth has begun!
2 counties have burn bans new this week. If we don't get moisture soon, more may follow. I've sworn off burning until moisture. It'll have to wait.

News at noon said Clark County fires are 95% contained.

News reports early estimates that 100,000 miles of fence destroyed.(My thought is 10,000 miles of fence)

I was talking to a real estate broker who is a volunteer fireman from adjoining Meade County. He said in his 27 years of firefighting he had been a little scared, but this time he didn't think he would make it out alive. Fortunately, one escape route became apparent and he used it to stay alive. He said fire was so hot that the radiator in a new fire truck blew.

All involved in these fires have been through a lot. A long rebuilding will begin and the spirit of these ranchers and others will bring it back.
