Finally

Finally got my first deer today. I logged a lot of leg miles to get this first deer. I took it off public ground using the Savage Arms 20 ga and Nikon slug scope at about 70 yds. I didn't have to trail it as it dropped right there and drug it out about 3/4 mile. Going out again tomorrow. I see more deer than pheasants when I'm out.

Congratulations! You have to post a picture. Your first deer is always something special. I had deer loin for dinner tonight. Still thanking my son(telepathically) for his shooting skills.

Congrats on your first deer. I remember mine well.

Ive learned alot since, but nothing more important than taking good care of your deer meat after its on the ground!

Properly handled, prepared and served, there are few things that are better on the pallette.

If youre cutting it up yourself, get the hide off of it immediately.

I cut all the select cuts into grillable table fair. Grill it to meduim rare, and serve it hot is paramount.

The rest gets ground into hamburger.

Miss one detail taking care of your deer, and you just as well make sausage out of it.

Enjoy!

Tip of the cap to you.Makes me wish I'd moved back to sd in time to apply as a resident.Sure missing a freezer full of loin steaks, hamburger and jerky.

The wife said she would post the pic. I love deer meat. Had two people give me their deer. I need to learn how cut up and process.

Thats a 20 guage slug gun? How long is the barrel? MY Marlin is only 22 inches.

Guessing it is a high-power. Southern IA counties have a rifle deer season.

It's a slug gun. Barrel is right around 22". I really like it. No rifles allowed in the county I was hunting. No feral hogs this far north and will shoot on site.

Got my second deer tonight also on public ground. When it rains it pours, Thank God. Little easier shot at about 25 yds but wasn't broad side like the other one. Dropped dead in spot. My dad was hunting on other side of the property and I was trying to get deer to go his way. He got a shot but I was unable to find the deer. I can't stand that but I know it happens. In Iowa you can't use dogs to recover deer. Does anyone in other states have their dog trained to recover deer? I have a DK would have been nice to use him to recover deer if was trained for it and state allowed.
