My dad was a bird hunter and that is how I got into chasing birds. Started when I was probably 7 or 8 carrying a Red Ryder BB gun as he hunted with our Britt Nellie. Only hunting I knew, didn't start deer hunting until I was in my mid twenties, but bird hunting has my heart. We always went to Iowa and worked our butt's off for birds. We hunted Indiana for pheasants in the north and chased quail on relatives farms in central and I hunted grouse in southern Indiana.
Had the privilege to introduce my college roomate to bird hunting. He went with us to iowa, he was hooked, he bought a brittany and had several litters.
With my son every chance I got I tried to get him out, but he played travel hockey and I coached so his and my hunting took a backseat to his sports. Nothing wrong with that, but I did worry did I miss the opportunity to get him hooked. Glad to say as he has aged the hunting bug as hit him hard. Opportunities are still few as he is back in college, but we take advantage of his breaks to take trips. I think the key whether young or old is having positive experiences in the field with dogs and birds. Glad to say we have introduced his deer hunting buddy to bird hunting.
