everyone says my dog is too skinny?

first off....i live in lab country, and since 95% of the labs around here are overweight, I live in fat lab country. people aren't used to seeing fit dogs, much less fit GSPs.

Every time someone sees my GSP, they say he is too skinny and i need to feed him. I happen to think that he is pretty much perfect???? maybe I am wrong though and I do need to fatten him up a bit.

the reason they say he is too skinny is because he rear end. His front has filled in and as you can see from the inside pic, there is even a little neck roll behind his collars, so that is fine. On the back side though, you can see his tailbone slightly protruding, and there is some sink in past the ribs. this is what nobody around me is used to seeing? when he is on a full on sprint I can see his ribs, but when he is standing next to me, I can just feel them when I run my hands down him. His spine isn't visible unless he is sitting and bending in to clean his underside.

what you guys think? I took some pics:

Your dog looks good to me.

Believe it or not I have a lab that is built like that. I get told all the time that I don't feed him enough

He looks fine. My vet told me my dog was to skinny before. I wouldn't dare take him in after hunting season, they might call aspca on me.

well then you know how annoying it is. like i said, most are used to out of shape, larger framed dogs around me. the only guys with in shape dogs have longer hair, so you can't see the body so good.

thanks.

LOL!

i am slowly upping his food in preparation for hunting season, so he might bulk up a little. he is super active now and i think that is the reason that he just doesn't gain a bunch of weight, even when feeding more. seems that if i feed him more the only thing gaining weight is the waste bag.

he eats a food with 30% protein and 19% fat, so not sure what more i could do.

I have the same problem with one of mine. Gets twice the food that the other 2 do and I can't keep it on him. Vet says he is fine. Metabolic rate must be off the charts. Like when I was a teenager!!!:D

Don't sweat it people say that about mine all the time to its just the way they look, its called in shape!! I will be out of town hunting and see other guys dogs around the motel and see how big they are and as im laughing to myself I say to myself I can tell that dog gets out lots poor thing

I really think that the problems is that people aren't use to seeing a real hunting dog.

Or maybe I should say a real upland hunting dog.

I totally agree. I see more out of shape dogs at motels during hunting season than I do in shape. Always amazes me.

Funny thing is my dog is ripped. People are probably saying poor dog, his owner doesn't look like he gets out much:D

I think he looks fine. At least people dont think he's a chocolate!!!
Heres a working retriever. Labs! blah:D

Yeah he's a big boy, his chest could be a bit deeper..
.other than that he was born to run

Yea he looks like a stud. Mine is the strongest dog I have ever had. His chest is real deep. Fast for a lab, great swimmer. Maybe we could get out when the snow flies

they dont know what they are talking about if they say that dog is to skinny!!!

was he out there raiding the pumpkin patch??? looks like hes in a pumpkin patch lol

We'll have to do that, the two of us, get the dogs together. It'll be a good time.

Have no doubt about that dog of yours. For sure a stud.

Well of course a vet would tell you your dog is too skinny, he can't make money off of a skinny dog.

Has anyone read Ted Kerasote's book "Pukka's Promise, The Quest for Longer-Lived Dogs" ?

Looks good to me. When I picked up my pointer the breeder/trainer told me when he turns about a year old you are going to want to call me thinking something is wrong because he will be so skinny. I guess its in his dads genes. Sure enough. Of course that boy has 2 speeds. full and point.
