English cocker training

Have trained and hunted since 1969 several pointing breeds and retrievers. Still hunt a variety of game birds from the east coast west to Arizona and Idaho.

With advancing age have purchased an English Cocker, now 5 months old. Will be hunting grouse, pheasant, woodcock and even quail with her. Have her reliably retrieving. (Note that this pup was actively swimming at 10 1/2 wks). Breed is highly active, intelligent, athletic, and biddable yet with a mind of their own. However, the breed cannot withstand a “heavy hand”.

What are suggested methods and techniques of training an English Cocker that provide consequences for incorrect behavior (e.g., not coming on command which is big concern near roads and also chasing deer, etc).

Well, E collar. Dog might be too young for that. 5 months Is still a pretty young pup.
I know it is but was wondering if there were any other proven methods. This pup is really progressing fast. Was swimming at 10 1/2 wks and now consistently retrieving from both land and water. Do you know of anyone with cocker training experience?

Swimming at 10.5 weeks and retrieving from land and water consistently at 5 months would not be progressing really fast but on a normal schedule. Not for sure what state you are in but in Kansas I would call Chad Betts. I have his number if you would like it. He usually takes the pups at 6 months of age and has them for 3-4 months, which is pretty standard. Otherwise, it is quite simple to search the internet for a trainer. As far as training, not for sure what you are asking. You would do obedience just like any other dog. Use a slip lead, a few treats, and start teaching obedience. At 5 months she should already being doing her obedience so I wouldn't say she is progressing fast if she can't. At 5 months that dog should be able to do obedience on a lead, and off but not reliable yet. She should have had a ton of bird exposure already and should have a good recall with and without birds. I would still have her on a check cord when handling birds until after collar conditioning. Check out the Whitewater Gundog link to see what a 5 month old pup should be doing. There are tons of You Tube Video's on field cocker training, just do the research yourself.
