I'm from WI, but have relatives in Lawrence KS. I visit them 2-3 times during the hunting season. How far do you have to go (I would assume west) to get into some decent pheasant hunting.

Thanks, Billyb

Everybody has their own definition of "decent", but I would say you should head at least two hours West from Lawrence. Then I would also allow another hour for travel North or South from I-70. You should be in decent pheasant country.

This is sound advice based on my experience!

I would say Glen elder is the starting point, and then as you go west from there it only gets better.

This is a good example of what Toad was referring to by different definitions of decent. You'll find plenty of pheasants doing what Toad suggested. Going a little further will give you the opportunity to see a few more pheasants per day. There is decent pheasant hunting E of Glen Elder still.

Billy B - Next time you are in Lawrence if you don't care about shooting wild birds or not you should check out Eckman Hunting Preserve. Mike Eckman runs the place and I have had nothing, but good experiences there. By the time you factor in the food, gas and time to drive out west into decent wild bird country you can be hunting pheasant, quail, and chukar 10 minutes from Lawrence. Just a thought. I do it a lot before the season starts just to get the dog ready and because I can't always wait until November. Good Luck.
