Early Spring Report

Hey all, well, spring is here! Just thought I'd give a quick report. Been seeing quite a few birds on the road, most of them are paired up and ready to nest. I've seen about the same as last year, but that's not to say there are a few more the ditch cover.

The weather is about average for this time of year, no real frost and temps have been fairly steady compared to earlier this year. It is dry, we've been getting some rain, but not much. We've had a few red flag warnings, so wild fires are a concern.

Hopefully we'll get just the right amount of rain and the temps hold for a good nestling and brood season. If it does, we should have a very good season.

Stay well my friends!

Greg, is everything still looking good up there? Are you still expecting another good year?

Lots of small ND towns (many with a rather old average age population) reaching out to neighboring small towns for help only to find that they are a mess too. Barns, Ransom, Griggs, Cass, and Steele counties hit the hardest. Not really pheasant country, but I am pretty sure I have killed roosters in 4 of those counties - probably mostly in the 1980s.

Interesting story:

It was storm chasers that found 2 of those killed in the Enderlin area.

Storms aside, been seeing a lot roosters on the road. No hens, cause they're on the nest or taking care of the broods.

Weather has been good, warm to hot, but we're getting rain, so hopefully the broods will do well.

The farmers and ranchers are starting to cut hay now. Hope most of the nesting is done.

Guess we'll see what happens the next few weeks

Stay well my friends

I'm working in ND at the moment, and out driving around quite a bit from day to day. Eastern 1/4 of the state though, so definitely not a prime area.
I did see a hen with one chick last week, and I'm sure there were others I didn't see since they were standing right next to tall grass. The chick was smaller than a quail.

I also saw a pair of huns a couple of days ago, which was surprising. Didn't expect to see any huns this far east.

Conditions look great in this area. Green, lush, and plenty of water around. Hoping it looks great out west too.
