Last year was the first year in over 20 years that I hunted early season chickens. When I was much younger I had a little EP female that I hunted with quite a bit and used to shoot a few chicken over her when the early season first started. Last year I had some points but none held.
Today I thought was going to start the same way. Decided to take Obie since Bob has some injury issues right now and the oldest of the 3 really doesn't need the bird work so I got Obie One loaded up and we were on our way. Let him out and he took off like a rocket. No wind but nice, wet grass. He ran right through a single. Then the Astro said he was on point at 226 yards, due north. So I walk and he comes into view. Sure enough along the path in the pasture he is locked up tight. About a dozen birds all together. I decided to pull the trigger on one just to get a bird shot over him. I sent him for the retrieve and he picked it up and delivered it to me like he had been doing it all along.
Sorry for the crappy cell pictures but I didn't think I had time to really get in close.
It got the full force of number 6's through a full choke at 30 yards. Felt sorry for it because it was this years hatch. I'll marinate the breast tomorrow and grill it up for lunch!
Forgot to add this. To make the morning even more special the gun I used today is a 1950's Browning O/U lightening model in 12 guage choked full over modified. It belonged to my father. I have many fond memories of him carrying that gun on pheasant hunts and opening day chicken hunts down at Cassoday back in the day. I am sure he is looking down from above nodding his head with approval.
