Is anyone taking preventive measures to keep there dogs from getting ear infections from swimming during the summer. Is there an otc that actually works?
 
My labs had ear infections and my vet said it can’t hurt to give a tablespoon of yogurt on food for a probiotic. I haven’t seen an ear infection since I started that several years ago.
 
Bannix seems to knock down a lot of the yeast on my Boykin. After swimming I’ll spray her neck and the underside of her ears on the tailgate before drying her off and taking her in the house.

I try to make Ace shake lots of times & sometimes remember to bring a towel to dry his ears. But...he's got an ear yeast infection as I write this. Luckily they clear up pretty quickly with Mometamax. Unfortunately it's not OTC. Might have to start blow drying his ears with a hair dryer.

Tried making molly ride in the bed of the pickup this summer if we drove to the water and no prevail. The crap from bomgaars ain't cutting it.
 
My Golden has infections in both ears and the typical RX wasn't working. About a month ago the vet suggested a new remedy - Mometamax. For 30 day's, no swimming, water in the ears or ear cleaning. So far it appears to be working - both ears are clear.
 
Right now my Black Lab has it in one ear. We have a black and chocolate out of the same mother, a year a part. The Choc does not get ear issues only the black does.

My vet prescribes Surolan, very similar to Mometamax. The rub is the vet always wants to take an ear culture to see if it is bacteria or yeast infection even though Surolan works for both. It is just another charge they can add on to the bill...

My 2 seem to get an ear infection every summer . Just took Annie my Springer to the vet yesterday. They put a oti-pack in each ear and it clears right up. I dont know if theres really a preventative.
So humid here. Warning- the oti pack makes them deaf for about a week. Its a waxy plug thats meant to stay in place that they cant shake out. $144 later we’re back at it…
 
There are two things I swear by for ears: TrizUltra+Keto Flush and Zyomax Ear Solution. TrizUltra is also a must have for the first aid bag for wound cleaning, etc. My med bag always has a full bottle ready for use.
 
Similar to what LC Smith indicated. I have a German Wirehair and Griffon. The Griffon seems to get a yeast infection on occasion. I treat her. With TrizEDTA (OTC) which is an Aqueous Flush use to clean the ear canal prior to administration of Simplera Otic Solution for dogs. I now use TrizEDTA Aqueous Flush every 12 to 14 days as a preventative to yeast infection with out applying Simplera and have had a great results.

I use the same TrizEDTA for his ears in the summer after he has been swimming off the boat. It’s good stuff!
 
Flush it with water and vinegar solution, it'll knock it out

4 caps of vinegar in a water bottle and knife a hole in the top and douche away, the ear that is, Po folks have Po ways but it works well .

One of the sporting mags, in the "vets" corner, says use 50% white vinegar and 50% alcohol...vinegar kills the bacteria and the alcohol dries the ear out quickly.

I'll second the Zymox Otic. Try to get the 4 oz bottle, which is often out of stock online. Had a lab with ear issues her whole life. With this stuff, you don't clean out the ears, you just squirt it in there and squeeze the lower ear together to mush it around. Leaving the old gunk in there allows for the enzymes/bacteria to do their thing.

Preference is for the red or blue bottles, since they have 1% Hydrocortisone too.
