Duck Club

So I was looking to join a duck club so I would have a spot to do some waterfowl when I'm not bird hunting, and people want like 2 grand at the least thats alot for calling ducks myself and having my own dog. Rather spend the money and a bird ranch and shoot ringnecks input everyone?

Well to say I have been involved in the discussion, and purchased an equity membership in a local club. To me, it is less than 30 miles from home, the members are congenial, it is preserved for life, it is managable for wildlife, can be willed to the next generation, the birds are "wild", not some pen-raised chicken. I have been an almost exclusively an upland bird hunter, even though I had opportunities to do more waterfowling, I walked past ducks, by thousands in the rainwater basin, never fired a shot. Now, not as spry as I used to be, frankly, I doubt that the upland bird numbers will surprise me, they haven't since the 1980's, mostly quail. I'm speaking of, wandering the pheasant belt searching for cover and populations, with high dollar gas, time is an issue to, the inevitablity seems obvious. I won't try to re-assure you that the upland life can be at replaced, maybe agumented is appropiate. It won't for me, but it's better than nothing. This might be the best waterfowl year in history, period, if you have water. At least that is a reason to get excited about. We'll tell the grand kids about it. Maybe!

I just got back from taking my pup out for her first waterfowl hunt, I hadn't done it in about ten years and now I remember why. Everything is soaking wet and covered in the most foul smelling mud on earth not to mention the game tastes like a sweaty shoe. I would save the 2k myself.

It's a sport you either love or hate. It can be expensive in buying decoys, calls, shotguns, shells, waders, coats, gloves, etc etc. And you will almost "always" need the latest decoys out and calls as well.

I personally wouldn't pay 2K to belong to a duck club. One, I can't afford it, and two I would rather spend that 2K on decoys and stuff. I like the whole scouting part of waterfowling. There is always some sort of self satisfaction coming from shooting a few birds that you found through you hard work.

Why dont you find a pheasant/upland game club/preserve that also allows members to waterfowl hunt on the property during waterfowl season. I joined such a club here in Minnesota and it is great.
