So how did it go, for all you dove hunters? I had a great couple of day of wing shooting small Birds. Got my limit of 10 morning doves and white wings, more white wings then morning dove. Collared doves have no limit and we shot lots of them, the first day. Today different place, mostly Juvie Morning doves.

I hope you all have a great hunt.:)

Sounds like you had a great hunt!

I hope to get out tomorrow some time. I'll be trying for doves, squirrels.

best of luck 1pheas4, tree rats are alot of fun to hunt, and better table fair then doves IHO.

I'm waiting on Quail Hound to post up a report about his Mountain Quail hunt. I believe it opened for him on the First.

I think I might have changed Race the last two days. The sun has changed my tan, from brown to dark brown with a red tint. GD it's hot down here. LOL:D

LOL...yep, that's hunting this time of year. Too hot and too much sun!

I was talking to a gentleman this evening as he was packing up after the hunt.

He said a group went out yesterday and shot 118 morning doves. They shot 33 geese between yesterday and today. Seems like there's a lot of doves out there this year.

I asked about pheasant sightings. He told me he was seeing a lot of pheasant chicks a month ago and hearing a lot of birds cackling:thumbsup:

Mountain quail starts next Saturday Jmac. As for the doves well, I don't know where they went. Couldn't make it out yesterday morning so I let my brother borrow JP, him and my dad shot limits but everyone else not so much. I took the pups last evening and they had a ball even though we only got 4 birds. This morning I shot 8 but they just weren't flying good. Oh well, I dreaming about the high country now.

Yes QH, yesterday the doves where not flying, until about 10:30 am. Then totally shut down at 11:15. strange day. Out after more this am.:)

Got my limit of mourning doves, plus a few eurasians here in eastern Colorado on Saturday. Most of the mourning doves were juveniles. Birds were'nt really flying as it was windy as all get out. The plan was to spook 'em out of wind rows and shoot them as they came back. Worked pretty well as I spent more time driving out from Colorado Springs than I did shooting.

Have a Good 'Urn,

HIgh jacking my thread. Today was one of the worst days, I have ever had afield.

I witnessed one friend shoot an other friend. In a dove field with way to many dang People in it. THis is going to be a long story. I'm sorry but, it needs to be told.

We where the first group to enter the field, long before sun up. By legal shooting time 100 plus floks joined us in the same 40 acre field off of the 202, around phoenix greater area. all legal to hunt, as of last year. We are already in the center, of that field, at day break.

People horning in on our spot. ( I sould have left and gone home) The 1st hour things are great, people are respecting other peoples shooting lanes. Hour number 2, the second wave of people start coming in to join the hunt.
This is becoming a problem fast. I tell my group of hunters, " Im done I'll wait at the truck." About that time one of my friends yells "over" Another of my friend swings on the dove, and fires. Hitting the first friend at about 60 yards. Just missing myself and another friend. The man( my friend) Got hit in the Ear, Stomic, and the Calf. Three 7.5.

There was a Game and Fish Office 15 yard away, who saw the hole thing. He didn't write up my friend, for the offense. Befuddled. WE left the field, and took my shot friend to the nearest ER.
After a cat-scan and several hours, He was cleared to leave, the hospital, and go home. He called me and stated that 2 more people from the same field, were at the at the ER. You got it shot dove hunting.

I guess I'm a liar,( I got shot in this same field last year ) BC I said, I would not hunt ever agian this close to the city. MY FRIENDS TALKED ME INTO THIS HUNT AFTER, I OBJECTED.

I left a ton of details out of this rant, however I hope I made my point.

Jmac it sounds like a day from hell. Thank God your friend isn't injured worse than he is!!! I hope and pray he has a quick recovery and stays in the game somehow.

My dad too was shot by his best friend. Still has lead bird shot in his gut to this day. He and his friend haven't hunted together since the accident. Not because my dad wasn't willing, but his buddy felt terrible about the whole thing. Understandably so.

Hopefully everything mends and you can all move forward and past this day somehow. Best of luck

Yes Nick,

The shooter friend is very upset. He has stated he is done with dove hunting for life. The thought has entered my mind also, at least around the city areas.
I'll bet the Game and Fish closes this field next year because of shootings in this field. To many guns in a small area.

What a terrible situation jmac! Glad to hear your friend is okay. I hunted a field with about 50-60 guys in it this w/e too, but fortunately, nobody was shot.

KB,

Thank you, My friend said he is very sore, but other wise fine, and going to work.

I had night-mares over and over last night. Replaying this like watching a horror movie. I can't get it out of my head, that it could have been prevented, so easily by simply not shooting a bird not in clear sky behind it.
I seem to remember, this being taught to me at a very young age.

My other friend (the shooter) is a wreck right now. He was the oldest Guy in our group by 15 or 20 years. While he should have known better, I can't help feeling for him. Just goes to show you, that Saftey has got to be the number one thing on everyones mind while hunting. Momentary Laps in reason turn thing very ugly fast.

It will be like this for a few days Jmac. Try to keep your hands busy with work or other actives. Keeping your mind from straying helps a lot.

It doesn't seem like it right now because you're in the thick of it, but everyone involved will move on and life will get back to normal.;)
