Dog predicament. Any solutions?

I don't know if you found a breeder or dog, but you could check out Scotty with Shock Kennels. He offers started and finished WPG's and GWP's. Scotty's located in Ledger MT.

Go for it. Get a started dog. You said you are dog people. Remember, its always easier to get forgiveness than to get permission. Just don't bring a dog home that had the same name as my old girlfriend's name. That was really stupid on my part, but that started dog was the best one I have ever had.

Hello all. I was wondering if I could tap into your collective wisdom to answer a problem that has arisen as it pertains to my acquiring a bird dog.

After three years of living apart from my family, I am finally moving my wife and kids up here to North Dakota to live with me. What's more, we are finally going to have a living situation that is conducive to owning my first hunting dog. We had plans to pick out a pup next spring (2017), and add him to our family. However, a problem has surfaced. My wife has voiced a concern that she might not be ready for a puppy that soon. We have three young children from 11 months to five years, and she feels that a puppy might overwhelm her. And in all fairness, she does have a valid concern. I work 60 hours a week, thus the burden of house breaking the pup would fall largely on her shoulders.

My question is this; how feasible is it to get a started dog as a compromise? I've pretty much got my heart set on a pointer, specifically a German Wirehaired pointer. How common is it to find a started dog in that breed and how do I go about finding any breed of started dog, let alone a GWP? Or would it be best just to wait until my wife is ready?

Any insights on this problem would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

A started dog might be the way to go. I am not taking anything away from buying a started dog because that is what works for people in there situation.

I am a firm believer in getting a puppy from the eight weeks of age and having that bonding from the beginning. I think it just makes for a better family companion and hunter. I have tried a few older starter dogs in my years and in my opinion there was just something missing. Once again I am not trying to offend anyone here it's just my own personal opinion, to each his own.

Believe or not I have people who buy pups that want the pup at day 49(7 weeks). Once in a while we will release a pup on day 49 but not often. The 6-8 weeks window is really important socialization in the pups development where he or she will start learning the proper behavior. This is a valuable timeframe that can never be replaced.

I am sure you will make the right decision that benefits your family and the dog you choose. Wish you all the luck!
