Must have been conditions, she has been a bird finding machine past 2 days.
Surrogator birds are flying strong. Seems the longer birds are out the better the dogs are senting them.

have you had your english pointer since a pup? when did you start training prior to this incident?

and i see in another thread that you may be getting a GSP as well too. if the GSP is pointing and is somewhat good on training, your english pointer will learn from the GSP.

Birdman ask any good Dog trainer and they will tell you every dog is an individual. They will learn some things from other dogs but mostly the bad habits. One dog teaching another to point Never. That is a gene issue or something happened to make the dog stop pointing quail. I would discuss this with a local trainer and get some ideas on how to make it point quail again........Bob

Bob I think it was conditions, it was in the 90s, we had a kool spell for a few days and she was right back to her old self. Sport and Kelly no problems, they had been on guide strings most of there lives.

The gsp is really green. But I have the means to train her, have homers, remote launchers, ecollars quail and phes on the farm.

Good deal Bobby, I hope she turns out well for you. Keep us posted on the progress with her. If you run into problems, I doubt you should have some, but just ask and somebody should have an answer for you........Bob

i know point is something you cant teach the dog. i knew that. doing all basic commands like come, sit and so fourth are what is needed to teach, once she/he points... pretty much ready to hunt except knowing if your dog is not gonna be gunshy.

sometimes you may have to shake things up if i do to much repitition in the summer and early fall my broke dogs get bored and dont want to work

I have never had a gunshy dog. I break my dogs to gun from the time I get them. Until I am positive the gun does not bother them. It means taking the dog out and letting it field run free. Then shooting when they are in front a decent distance. Working with a young pup, I find I can teach them a lot and get a lot of the basic stuff done before they are 6 months old..................Bob

Bob I think you answered you own question.
I was told to let birds set for at least 15 Min. And train your dog in early morning for a better sent cone in the summer.
Good luck to you
I also have a 1 1/2 old EP.

Not mentioned but one thing to look at is how you are handling the birds. I have seen various dogs either not point or retrieve pen raised birds when not handled properly. Try to minimize your own scent on the bird by using some sort of glove and I think you will see better results. Also like some have said try to go at it early or late in the day so it is cooler. I have never let birds sit longer to build a scent cone but it may work for you if needed. Just a couple of suggestions, I am in no way trying to tell you how to conduct your training. Good luck and I hope that things really turn on for you and the pup.
