Do Roosters ?

Do the smart roosters have an uncanny ability to fly right into the sun? Do the surviving roosters learn to flush and fly low so as you can't shoot for fear of hitting the dog or blockers? It certainly seems that way on a number of outtings this year and today was horrible with roosters going right into the sun. By the time I could tell they were cocks, they were out of range! Whats the deal with kamikaze roosters coming right back at you, you would be justifed in shooting for self defence but then there would be nothing for supper. Are the birds just stressed with the economy or are they just getting mean and crazy? On one outting, Duke was tracking a rooster on fence line when the rooster jumped out and cackled at us in our face (about 5 feet away) before taking to the air. I never saw Duke so confused in all our time together. If that would have happened in any other sport there would have been a penalty for unsportsman like conduct. So maybe its time to sell the 12 ga, get out the .410 and a good knife for inclose shooting or hand to wing combat. I'm also thinking about getting kevlar jackets for me and Duke, after this strange year it might be a good idea.

Freakin awesome post. :10sign: Made me laugh my A#$ off! I definitely think a few of those birds have read the Art of War.

Great post! LMAO! Went out yesterday and the sun was shinning for one of the few time in the winter in my state and sure enough, a Rooster went up right into the sun! All you see is spots! Thanks for the great post!

Roosters flying into the sun happened to me at least a few times.

Usually happens hunting on one of those long narrow patches that collects tumbleweeds to about 6 foot deep. I had a rooster pinned once that flew at the only angle which prevented me from taking a shot.

How about birds that flush low and away from a hillside with your dog so close you can't take a shot? That happens to me, too.

I think it is fair to say the older birds know a few tricks that keep them alive. At the end of drives it seems there is always a wise bird sitting in the fence line a few yards away and of course the ones that run behind you. This time of year it seems that a lot more of the birds we are killing are 1+ year old birds.

Late in the season trhe sun is low and the situation is even worse, I try to hunt around that issue while still allowing for the wind in the dogs face or cross,, but sooner or later(or both), one will head for the sun regardless of how you have positioned yourself . Pity the bird that cackles in this scenario tho.
