Depressing

It's depressing knowing that this Sunday will be the last day of the season for me. Just when I get one of the pups up and going good the season comes to a close.

The wife and I are heading out Saturday to the area where I began the early chicken season at. Going to pack our lunch and some "Obie snacks" for Obie and hunt all morning, then find a log to eat lunch on. Hopefully we will find some birds. She is a self proclaimed amature photographer and has a pretty nice camera so I'm hoping to get some good photos of Obie on point.

Sunday it's out to where we spent our wedding anniversary bird hunting in the Flint Hills. I suppose it will be just myself, Obie, and my older, free pointer I aquired the year before last. Bob would go but he is torn up from 2 days of hard hunting. His ears, stomach and "other parts" are torn up. He will be doing some RandR this weekend.

Then the long wait will begin. I have plenty to do with the dogs before next year though. Lots of projects around the house to.

All in all it was a good seaon. Not a lot of birds killed but the dogs were able to get into some and thats what really counts.

Good luck on your hunt. I too will be heading to great state of Kansas on Monday. Planning on hunting till Wednesday afternoon.

I'll grant you it's a little sad to see the season end, but this has been a pretty sucky one overall...

I'm planning to do more training, conditioning, and happy time with them than I have done in previous off seasons, so I guess I'm not feeling the sting too bad.

There's always something to look forward to, including (hopefully) better bird numbers next season.:D:cheers:

I hate to see the season end.

The season has been a fun, but we had to work hard for the birds we did find.
Quail numbers were not good but better that the pheasant numbers that were supper low in this area.

The dog are always funny after the season ends. They are used to the routine that when I am home in the morning, hunting is a good possibility. They follow every step and move, trying to see if we are going hunting.

Hope to get them out one more time.

It is sad to have the season end, but I am worn out. I will have had nearly 40 full days afield this hunting season. It's not been nearly as bad as last year, but it has not been good.

Yes that is what really counts.

it was hard to let the IL season go this year...it was an EXCEPTIONALLY GOOD one for me...but all good things must come to an end...I just hope the quail give me a good hatch next year again. The winter has been VERY harsh so far on the birds I hope it gets better ..I don't like the cold and snow any more than they do...lol Kansas extends my quail season by about 25 days and after that I always think about Oklahoma which goes into Feb. at some point my wallet says NO MORE ..your done..:( but I do have a very good friend in Florida that is a quail biologist....he has invited me down there several times and I've never gone. some day. I save my Florida days for BIKE WEEK:)

last hunt

just finished 2 1/2 days in w. kansas, was on the ground about 16 hr. total, two of us ran 3 dogs. total dead birds was dismal. during that time we saw just over 80 birds that the dogs were involved in one way or the other, just over 1/2 were roosters, flushed one flock of 14 hens (all) and one flock that had 8 in it, that was a positive. as usual, some birds held and some didn't much like the dogs. divot had a wonderful three days, the other two struggled. had a pinch of fresh snow in some places and none in others. the biggest impression left was that in spite of the dry year's there were but few places that would have supported pheasants. lack of moisture is a problem but not nearly as big as what farming has done to the pheasant's survival, don't know the answer to this problem but it is huge. to have a bounce back, the birds need someplace to go.

cheers
