Deer Season is Upon Us

Quick poll of how many people hunt during the deer season? I'll stay out of the fields the first weekend and load up on high level of blaze thereafter. Anyone stay home? It's a long time to be out of the field.

I personally wouldn't be out during the deer season unless I lived in the area and knew where I could go to avoid deer hunters.

This topic has been discussed over and over and over.

I have no issue going out midweek in traditional prairie pheasant areas. Deer gun hunters on the prairie are done (easily) and off stands before 9AM. Deer are largely nocturnal especially on the prairie. To be honest I have never seen much of anyone hunting deer in SW and far WC MN.

I would not hunt where others are already there (standard practice for me anytime) and I would not hunt on public land where woodlots or adjacent deer stands are present and/or occupied.

Weekends are where you would see the crazy big drives.

I'll be out there...hunting deer.

The area I deer (and pheasant) hunt overlaps and I would never even consider pheasant hunting during the 9 days its open. Nearly every single neighboring property has stands and hunters. Isn't worth it.

No orange is illegal in MN. And should you choose to hunt when deer gun season is open, additional blaze orange requirements are mandated.

The season is only 9 days in most of the state. Pheasant season is like 2.5 months. Just sayin'

Goose ... the MT tactic is extremely common in ND and SD. I have actually seen pickups chase deer in SD. I have seen people in the back of pickups shoot at a coyote ... which I believe is legal ... in SD.

While we don't really plan pheasant hunts during MN firearms deer season, I've shot a lot of roosters while doing deer drives in west central MN.

That's interesting. So are you hunting deer or pheasants? Obviously a slug is needed to shoot a deer and bird shot is for pheasants.

Also, I imagine the dog isn't present since hunting deer with a dog is against the rules.

I hunt both. If you are licensed for upland and firearms deer in MN, there is no restriction on possessing birdshot and slugs at the same time. You can even load your gun with both. If I'm walking the edge of cover I'll carry my shotgun and muzzleloader or handgun. If I'm in the cover, I may or may not mix shot, or if I've already tagged out, might just load straight birdshot and shoot roosters, letting the others chances at any deer that get up or cross in front of me. In the group I post/push with, interior pushers rarely do any shooting at deer as a safety precaution, but birdst that flush up can present shot opportunities. Some of the stuff we push is so thick the walkers don't even carry guns. It's pointless.

9 days is nothing.

The only difference is, pheasant hunting is a way better time than deer hunting. I ain't gonna sit out the chance at a rooster because deer is open. 9 days to waste of pheasant season is 9 days too many. Just be courteous of other hunters as always and avoid any trees or areas with orange blobs sitting on a seat waiting for a deer to prance by. In short, common sense.

The only advice I can offer you is to be safe about it. I know you have goldens and there are a lot of dip shit deer hunters out there during the firearms season that wouldn't even think twice about shooting at a dark colored dog that even slighly resemebles a deer. No rooster is worth getting shot at, whether its you or the dog.

You cannot have bird shot and slugs in your gun while deer hunting. You would get rung up by a CO in a heartbeat. Whoever told you that must not like you. You are still in the process of deer hunting with a legal shotgun loaded with illegal projectiles

Have my own property for deer turkey. Sadly zero upland birds
Two buck getting ready to square off till they seen me
Turkey hunt was good, fun watching them. They either take hours to move 100’ or 5 minutes

Were muzzle loader only fun time

Why my dogs wear blaze orange neck gaiters hope most hunters think human finger off trigger when orange is spotted
