December Hunting

Was out to Aberdeen the first week of November with my grown sons. Due to unforeseen circumstances, we were unable to hunt at all. The first night in one of our party was caught driving with too much beer in him. Now thinking of going back either December 12 or December 27. Three men and two labs. Have noticed most private land seems to close up calling it a season early December. Will probably hunt public land around Ipswich, Aberdeen, Redfield but would appreciate and advise/recommendations for private fee land. Willing to pay $200 per gun per day.

Keep in mind that is you purchase a NR license on or after Dec. 15th and use 5 days this year you have until the end of next year's season to use the other 5 days.

Look up Mike Yost in Redield. He has 700 acres west of Redfield out by Miranda. The land has been managed for wildlife. Never hunted there, but was given a tour of the land. Even though the birds are down, his land should hold thousands of birds as other cover disappears. He's a retired CO and seemed to be a good guy. I think he will take less than $200. Good luck

Thanks Zeb but already have a license purchased for the first trip in November. Thanks to everyone else for the leads on private land here and PM. I've never hunted so late in the season and suspect the birds will be very wild. Does anyone have an opinion on middle of December versus end of December? I'm semi-retired so it doesn't matter to me but my sons have full time employment and need to ask for time off.

When it comes to hunting in December it's all about the weather. Never know what to expect. There are years that if you had waited until the end of December you would not have been able to hunt because of the snow depth. A couple years ago I never hunted after Christmas as the snow was too deep for both me and the dogs. I have a friend from Colorado that has come hunting in December for nearly 20 years. We've hunted in all kinds of weather. The worst was a day years back when the temp was -20 and the wind was blowing about 30 mph.

So far we have had a great fall weather wise for hunting. One of the driest falls on record and the temps have been above normal. But all that could change in a heartbeat. Good luck on your hunt.
