Danger at Ft Riley

Earlier this year Ox sliced his foot wide open while hunting at the Fort. Cost me 2 weeks of hunting and an expensive vet trip. So for Christmas I got Ox a ridiculous looking chest protector (see photo) that comes down both his front legs. Surprisingly he runs in it just fine and it does not bother him one lick.

Last weekend I am quite certain it saved his life on some concertina wire out there. I can't say enough for the vest and putting your dog on a chain often as a puppy. the vest kept him from getting sliced initially, then Ox realized he was stuck and new not to fight being stuck (chain training). Then I came over got him unsnagged and we headed out of there.

Scirpentine wire! I knew that when I read your heading. It is all over the place in the fort. Your lucky, I saw a pointer layed open with his guts extended. I don't go there because of it. They leave it and use more. Your hunting on a battle field, only worse, unexploded ordinance, old claymores, stray ammunition all around. 100 years of making war on the same space. Have better chance of hunting in a mine field in Kosovo.

Riley cut himself open on wire there once. Thirty stitches later. One thing that was so striking about the cut was how clean and deep it was. His leg was flayed open to the bone, (literally could see bone, ) and he had no clue. Extremely clean, and deep. We walked out of where I was hunting and a CO came up and checked us. The CO pet Riley, and Riley jumped up (yeah, I know bad manners, but he was still a young pup) and left a bunch of blood on his leg. I looked him over, saw how bad it was, and got down the road to a vet immediately.
We have found it strung out for two three hundred yards. That's the nasty stuff. I've seen in it piles. Not neat rolled up piles, but like strung out and dumped.
I've found ordinence there, and just about everything in between.

As an aside, you might be interested in knowing that they are changing the regulations to register your weapon on Fort Riley too. It is considerably more difficult then it used to be. A background check is now involved. I'll PM you the link.
This is more then likely going to change where I hunt in the future.

C wire

Concertina wire is a pain to deal with anyway you go. Glad to hear your pup is ok. In the last 24 years I have had my battles with it I work hard to keep my guys cleaning it up but any post seems like they have it everywhere. If you get tied up in it don't fight it, just stop same goes for your dogs. If you need to cross it step on it then over it. Trust me I have been number one man on the breach team many times, Ranger on the wire works but can be a pain to get freed from it. Stay safe and have a good hunt.

Tom

Thank you for the info. Will never hunt my dog there. Ox is a great looking dog.

Thanks. I always enjoy hearing people compliment Ox's looks. When I brought Ox home the first time this was my wife's quote. "Oh you got a dog. Oh he's ugly." It's kinda fun to rub her nose in it a bit :)

I find it hard to believe they allow hunting even! Does the military still use the place? They should have cleaned all that up if they are letting civilians use the property. I would start a petitionn and talk to legislators and media. That wire is designed to lay you open and bleed you to death. It is a big razor blade basically. And yes I would never go back to a death trap like that either,LOL. He looks good, where did you get him?

Yes, they do. I've had tanks drive by me, hum-vees.
In fact, portions of the Fort are closed and you have to ensure that you don't wander into the wrong spots. Some spots are permanently closed, like the impact range.
Quick story. One time, I was leaving after hunting. It was getting to be dark. I am driving out and I see some soldiers walking along the road in full battle gear.
One of them flags me down. This is the conversation that we had.

Soldier: Hello, we are doing some training along here, and I have soldiers walking along the road and in the fields. Can you please drive through here for about the next mile slowly?

Me: Of course, absolutely!

Soldier: Oh. And if they start shooting at you, don't worry. They only have blanks in their weapons.

Me: Um... Great. I'll keep that in mind.

I was stationed at FT Carson CO for a while. Lots of wildlife then. I didn't have a dog, thank goodness. There was dangerous crap everywhere.
I went off into the mountains.:)

That's funny!

I have had a guy tell me heard artillery shells fly over his head while he was hunting out there.

Seriously? Fort Riley is there to train soldiers to perform their wartime mission, of course they still use the place. Why would you start a petition? To what end?

I was stationed there for 2 years in the 90s and birdhunted a lot. Had many memorable hunts there, particularly with quail. While I ran into concertina wire while hunting I was lucky that my Brit never got into it. Twice a year the post has a range cleanup where the soldiers go out and police up concertina wire, barrier material etc that is left over from training. They obviously can't find it all and units should do more in policing up their training materials. Problem with concertina is that it is very hard to see until you're right up on it.

The fort can be hunted, but you need to know where you are hunting and that there isn't wire there. They have a program where you can call it in and have it removed. They get some of it cleaned up, but it is still a risk.

When they are doing training, they close those areas to hunting. The people there are professionals and not stupid. They keep people safe. I have a lot of respect for them. But I wish they would have done a better job picking up the wire after training. Most of what I have found over there has been there for years.

No, I understand. What I meant is land now not used if thats what it was, by the military, and now public hunting. If they still use it active, with all that danger to the public, then I would think the public should not be allowed is all. Land not used by the military, now public, should be cleaned up. Thats what I meant to say. Sorry for the confusion, I did not think it was still in use by the military. Strange, never heard of that one before.

Fort Riley

Fort Riley is a military training center not a public hunting area. If you want to hunt on post understand there will be some limitations and restrictions but military training will take priority. When possible we open the post up to public hunting and are glad to have you just understand there are some inherent risks involved. My Soldiers work hard every time we are in the field to leave the training areas better then we found them but a generation of training is not an easy thing to clean up. Trust me I hear it every time we leave the field how happy my guys are that they don't get to go home because the training areas are required to be cleared before I can release them. Again sorry to hear your dog got cut but the post does provide some good opportunities for hunting.

Well said Tom
And if they ever put a day together where the public could come into the training areas to help clean up the wire, I know that I could get enough people to make a dent.

Just need something to drag the wire out and safely put it in. Best done after and area has been burned. I can tell that the guys are cleaning up after themselves now, it is rare that you see new wire. Thanks

When you bet back, look me up, would love to meet you.

First off Tom, Thanks, and say thanks from all of us. I can see where this can be conflict, and cant imagine what all the years of use has left. So what your saying is military folks can hunt it? or any one? I guess I just cant seem to understand why the gov would let any one hunt on a military installation, or training property. Just seems strange. You guys take care.

You have to by a special license, and register you guns on post. Sounds like there are new rules that include a background check in the furture to register your gun. But the public can hunt some areas in the training areas, as long as they check in and out on line.

But it is a military base, there are times where there isn't any open areas to hunt.
And as you have heard there is some old razor wire out in areas that are really had on a dog.
