Damned Quill PIgs

Saturday afternoon I took two of the Wrecking Crew (Queenie & the rookie Charlie) and walked my tree line. There is a particular clump of grass at the base of a Russian Olive that often holds a bird. Queenie got birdy at that clump, stuck her head in, and came out with a face full of quills. There were a good 20-30 quills in her face, nose, lips, and tongue. Took about 15 minutes of work with the multi-tool I carry just for this purpose, and I got them all out. Rinsed her face off and she was ready to keep hunting. That quill pig got dosed with a load of 4's and dumped far away.

My rooster superstar Harley got quilled in 2018 when we were hunting along the Cannonball River, but not as bad as Queenie got it Saturday. There were maybe a dozen quills, all in his muzzle, and he didn't want to quit hunting long enough for me to pull them. Tough luck, that's what I did. Wasn't exactly sure where he found the porky and didn't want to waste hunting time looking for it. That was one lucky quill pig.

For you NR's, quill pigs are quite common in western ND. Out here they often hide on the ground in tall grass, creek bottoms, and cattails. It's a good idea to be aware of this and carry a multi-tool to pull quills.

Absolutely and their are some huge ones out there. I had one of my Gordon’s get hit a few years ago. I saw her laying down and knew something was wrong. It took me the better part of an hour to get all the quills out. About four months later I was brushing her, I felt something sharp in her leg. You got it. A quill had apparently worked thru her body and came out her leg. She was lucky it didn’t hit her heart or lungs I hate those animals. They are very dangerous for dogs.

There are 3 critters that I shoot on sight.....porkers, skunks, badgers and honorable mention....Coons

Flame away!
Out here it's considered one's civic responsibility to kill every coyote and quill pig on sight. Porkys are easier as you don't have to lead them so much...

Probably like a damn possum and a buzzard won’t even eat a road killed possum. Enough said. Ha!
Honey got a big possum in SW MN on Sunday. That thing stunk baaaaad!

I knew she was pointing at a non bird due to her tail being out behind her. Thought it was a racoon. Even though she loves to fight racoons, I can usually call her off. Not this time. She dove in. No snarling?? My money was on it being a possum, and sure enough, it was a big one.

She was trying to get the taste out of her mouth as she left, when I finally got her off it. I could smell the thing from 6 feet away.

Yep but some of guys are good. They just want something to eat. Got a couple around the house. Kind of feel sorry for them.just got to watch out for rabies

My North Dakota. Be out there In two weeks. My rancher friends said it should be epic. I hope Been battling prostate cancer for ten months. My best friend has some dark days ahead of him too. We are just hoping for a hunt for our memories. The Lord blesses us that worships him. Please say a prayer for us. This could be the last one.

I got my tremendous Springset Gordon seters that I have raised for 40 years. They are awesome. I have the Will and drive. Just don’t have much gas left in the tank. That’s okay I will power thru it. Always been an athlete. Not laying down for shit.
