I received my SD 2012 Hunting and Trapping Handbook today. On page 42 under Dog Requirements, last year's "Dogs are required to have a health certificate from their local veterinarian indicating that all shots are up-to-date and they are disease-free animals" has been replaced by " Dogs are required to have a certificate from their local veterinarian indicating that they are vaccinated against rabies. A health certificate is not necessary for dogs traveling to this state with their owners for less than 30 days".

You'd have to piss off every Conservation Officer in SD before they would dig that deep into their bag of tricks.

Wow, I read the exact same thing last night and had to do a double take. All these years of spending $75.00 bucks at my vet for a health certificate are gone (at least in 2012)!!!

I agree it is unlikley to result in a ticket but for those of trying to be legit it was a pain.

3 weeks late and $150.00 later...........now you tell me......Better safe than sorry......I'm still going to carry it. It's my dumbass luck I'll get the newbie C.O that wants to see it..........

I get a cert... when I visit the vet every Sept, they do it for free for me...I guess they figure that I bring in 3 dogs and it wouldnt be right to charge me for keeping up with reg. maintaince of my animals???

We had a diiscussion about this issue a year or two ago. At that time I called the South Dakota GFP and was told they do not ever check for the certificate of health. Actually it's a Dept. of Ag reg. and not GFP. But I'm glad to see they have changed it in the hunting handbook. I always carry a record of my dog's shots during hunting season and also when going to other states for field trials. Never been asked to show it but I have it with me just in case.
