thinking about a trip to Kansas this week to try for prairie chickens....I've seen a lot of them while pheasant and quail hunting but never have tried for them. been researching some areas Flint Hills region....anyone been seeing any or hunting them lately?

Hunted them a few times this year. None seen. I would start by hunting the areas where you have seen a ton of them though. No need to re-invent the wheel.

I live in the Flint Hills and drive the backroads regularly. I just haven't been seeing chickens when I'm out. Sure, we'll see a single here and there, but I can't remember the last time I saw a nice flock of 'em. I'll make it a point this week to get out to some areas where I've seen 'em in the past. I've driven through those areas recently, but not at the time of day I would expect to see them.

If you do decide to hunt 'em here, I wish you the best of luck! Be sure to post pics too.

I hunted for 4.5 -5 hours.
Got 2 pointed but no shots. Only saw the two.
My two dogs covered 37 & 34 miles respectively.
Not a target rich environment.

Good year from what I have seen

I only got to hunt one time for them and we both killed our limits. They did not hold well for the dogs as soon as they locked up the birds flushed. Good luck.

Hunted them in Colorado this past weekend. One bird pointed, dog held it for a long time but still flushed way out of range. Just remember boot leather kills prairie birds not bullets.

Last day for me to get out chicken hunting today. Saw two. None pointed. Both flushed down wind of the dogs unfortunately.

It was good to be on the prairie running pointers tho. Nice way to spend my 22nd wedding anniversary with the wife too!

Good you got to see some.

I would have like to have gone today, but Indy cut himself and is on the IR for a week, and I didn't want to leave him at home by himself.

Can't go tomorrow so I guess I am done for the early season as well.
