Chasin Chickens

No right now its dove, teal, and prarie chickens in the early zone which lasts for a month. Pheasant season opens the second saturday in November along with quail.

I'll be in ND in the middle of Oct. I wouldn't mind coming down there for a few days. I've never hunted chickens, I don't know how to hunt them.
I know some locals watch them fly to feed then pass shoot them on the way back.

I still have a license from a Jan. hunt near Beloit what kind of a winter did the NC area get?

Anybody else been yet? I went out last Thursday to slog through the mud at a popular WIHA. Should have brought my bucket and some dove loads instead. Would have kept my socks dry and actually gotten a chance to shoot my gun.

After about 20 minutes in I saw another hunter walking the East side of the place so I stayed West and didn't hit as much of it as I would have done otherwise. Didn't see any chickens and didn't hear any shots from the other hunter. I did get one nice staunch point, but she gave up on it when I walked in and didn't get birdy there again.

Plenty of meadowlarks to scare the PIZZ outta you when they come up between your feet. No box turtles yet. I usually only shoot about one or two prairie chickens in a season, but get at least five or six points on box turtles. Maybe if I quit picking them up she would quit pointing them, but I like checking them out. Beats rattlesnakes and badgers, I guess.

This is the only way I know to do it as well. All I know is that I've seen them in grass on the sides of hills when walking pasture growing up. We usually hunted chickens flying into bean fields first thing in the morning before quail hunting. I never made it out for the early season until about 2 years ago and didn't see any birds while I was searching the pastures. Good luck if you do come and please let us know what you learn.

Well,,, the way I do is could more accurately be described as "exercise". Turn one out-of-shape hunter loose with whatever dogs he's got early in the morning and follow them around until you feel like turning back. I have a few places that I often encounter chickens, but mostly we're just out stretching our legs and daydreaming about November.:D
