Champ's 1st Preserve Hunt

The rain held off long enough on Saturday morning to get the dogs out for a preserve hunt. I always like to get the dogs out in September for a chance to shoot some birds over them. Champ did great at finding and pointing birds along with backing Nittany and Blitz. I was very happy with his performance today. It was a family outing with my two boys waling along and my wife taking the pictures.

Soon to be 11 year old Nittany was happy to be out:

It was good to be out with the family and the dogs should be ready for this fall. I will be testing Champ in the NA test in a couple of weeks for NAVHDA and I think he should do well.

I feel sorry for your wife, she has six boys to take care of! :D

It's great that your whole family takes part in these outings!

Looks like Champ is ready to do his part this year.

Looks like you are going to have a great season with your dogs. Are your boys old enough to hunt?

They are 9 and 7 and they have their mentor license. Connor went turkey hunting but we never had a chance to shoot. Each went squirrel hunting but we didn't see any squirrels when we were out last year. We'll see how this year goes.

If you don't mind me asking, which preserve did you go to? I have been to PowderBourne multiple times as the rates seem the best for the amount of birds but was just looking to get and idea about another place. The cover in the photos seem excellent.

I was at Mason Dixon Hunting Farm in Glen Rock, PA. It is close to York in south central PA. It is a working farm that also does hunts. They do not have a website but I can give you contact info if you're interested.

Yeah if you don't mind. Would just like to check out a few places. We usually go late in the season, Jan/Feb for one last go round

About birds reproducing on preserves, it doesn't really happen. I live fairly close to one private preserve and they put out thousands of birds each year. They don't see any reproduction on the grounds from what I've been told. It may happen once in a while but not enough to build a population. I would think the constant hunting and legal shooting of hens also has an impact if you compare a preserve to other places that stock birds.

I kinda figured that, but I seen on another forum where one preserve was letting there breeder birds go in the spring in hopes that a few might reproduce!
How are the birds you are raising this year doing? When do you release them?

I've read about places in the Midwest doing releases to help with breeding. I don't know if that happens much in the east since the surrounding habitat is not as good compared to the Midwest.

The birds are doing great. I've released a few hens but most of them get released throughout the hunting season. I still see a rooster or two from last year's releases.
