California Quail?

Ok. So my wife and I were out in central KS earlier this week and we flushed a covey of quail by the side of the road. My wife had a good look at them and thought that they looked very similar to California Quail since they had a weird thing on their head.

Is this possible? I just assumed they were bobwhite quail.

Bobwhites are capable of raising a topnot as well, but not a feathered plume. If you were in extreme SW Kansas, could have been blues, which are known locally as "cottontops", due to the white topknot. If they were California quail, they were refugees from a game farm or hobbiest. or the work of a farmer with a sense of humor!

California quail are easily identified. They wear sunglasses!
