Cabelas

Well being born and raised in Nebraska, I think Cabelas has lost its way. Out of the world prices now, and not having a good stock. Very disappointed I have now been driving to the Bass Pro in Iowa great slection and prices.

I think they've both lost their way, as well as Gander Mountain.

I go to the main BPS about once a month or so in Springfield. About the only time I buy something is if I am in their bargain store and find something on super double extra big closeout.

Was in Cabelas in Rogers, Arkansas this afternoon as I passed through. They had some good sales going on hunting clothes, but nothing I really just had to have. Bought some plastic ammo/dry cases that I'd been wanting anyways and they were on sale. Sales can be good there.

I agree though, they've lost their way now that they're publicly traded. How much chinese made crap do we really need anyways?

Part of my lack of enthusiasm is I've bought about everything I need, and if I come up with something I 'have to have', I'll buy it online from a number of retailers.

Can't wait for the Scheel's to open in Kansas City this year, need another option to not spend my money at. :)

Living in the middle of nowhere it is amazing how the net has made life tolerable in a place without shopping. Cabelas is the pioneer when it comes to mail-order delivery. I still think they excel in this venue, as for the storefronts I've never cared for them. Cabelas will still take almost anything back and usually has free shipping.

I was at a BPS this weekend and was disappointed as well. Not many guns in stock and little to no dog supplies. I know this is not their specialty, but I still expected more. Claimed they were out of stock still from Christmas. However, they did have some good deals, just not on anything I needed.

I don't know if I would say they have lost their way for me. To me they have just adapted more to a lost society.

They must appeal to somebody as their stores are still well stocked. Although, if you took all of the Under Armor out of the store it would be half empty.
A retailer cant please everybody..

Dick's in Minneapolis has less than Gander or Cabelas. Seems most of these box stores are very careful about excessive inventory is any category.

Clothing and jackets et al appear to be the main event...

That's due to clothing usually being marked up as far as 500%. Guns and ammo only make about 3% to 5% profit.

If thats accurate, can you really blame them for not having a particular vest in a certain size at a specific time of year? They still have a business to run and be profitable. I may not like it either but I get it.

Field & Stream Store

I have Cabelas, Gander Mountain and Scheels stores all relatively close by. None of them have the same appeal to me that they did years ago. Used to be I couldn't wait to get to a Cabelas store. Maybe its just because there really isn't much gear that I could use that I don't already have. It seems to me that they have gone more in the way of the everyday consumers and having less focus on hunting. I was in Erie, PA last summer and stumbled across a Field and Stream Store. Didn't even know they existed. I did not have much time to spend there but it looked good to me. Good selections, good prices, etc. I believe the store was pretty new but I am not sure. You can't really blame the stores as they are chasing the dollar. I for one will not spend the money that they charge for a Under Armor sweatshirt or a North Face anything! I don't mid paying for quality or for a unique product but I won't pay inflated prices for a LOGO!

I was giddy when it was announced that Cabela's was building a new store five minutes from me. Been going to their stores for many years when I was close to one on road trips. After about five times in the new store and having sent customer service complaints twice out the five times I have finally said to heck with it. They might as well say Wal-Mart on the front door. What a shame. I wonder if store sales are still doing well with all of the rapid growth around the country. They certainly lost this customer.

I get it, but I'd be very careful trading Cabelas for Walmart.

My preference has always been the hometown guy which hardly if at all exists around here anymore, then Online ordering from the specialty hunting, shooting supplier and then the local Cabela's , BPS type superstore.
Other than the occasional desire to roam a store my conclusion with the latest Cabela's disappointment is to cross them and their type off the list completely. I would rather just order online and not waste my time with companies that show no interest in taking care of their customer.
That's the Wal-Mart similarity I have seen consistently.

wow really i have been a cabela's fan from before they had stores. i know the cabelas family i am from the sidney nb area. that family is great i have had now problems with them at all. they stand by what they sell. Bass pro not so much.

I know the workers at the store in Lavista NE are rude as heck and took my in-laws from Louisiana there and they were rude than.

My instincts tell me that a lot of what is going on is there are so many people that do the Cabela's "outing" type visit that the employees get tired of trying to determine if the customer in front of them is legit or a window shopper full of hunting B.S. stories and little else.
The result is everyone is treated as a non factor. My final straw was having called twice to let them know I was coming to the Gun library to talk about a SXS and I was a serious vintage collector that had purchased high end guns from them before. Still got blown off when there and also no reply or follow up when I let management know my experience. Nuff said !

Stay warm gang.

ok brad you think that he internet is the problem. wow wake up how many orders do they get in a day. wake up.

I stopped at the Cabelas in Reno on my way to SD. The guys in the gun dept asked if I needed any help and I asked about a Dickinson 20 ga, guy said he had never seen one in the store and brushed me off. There was the exact gun in question literally 3 feet behind him in the display case. I get it, I'm a young(er) man and the guy probably thought letting me handle a $1500 gun was a waste of time but he may have lost a sale as my newly paid off credit card was burning a whole in my pocket lol. I went down the road to Scheels and they answered every question I had and let me handle every shotgun I asked to, even the really nice ones behind glass.

Gander Mountain, BassPro and Cabelas may only make 3 to 5 percent on new
firearms, but they try to gouge you on the price on used firearms.
