Tomorrow I leave for Huron, SD and the annual Ringneck Festival. Friday I will be running my nearly 3 year old Brittany, Elle, in the Bird Dog Challenge and on Saturday my team will be competeing in the pheasant hunt competition. This will be my 13th consecutive year at the Ringneck Festival.

I get back home on Sunday to re-pack and leave Monday morning for Colorado for a week of elk hunting.

All this hunting is getting tough on an ol' guy! But I guess someone has to do it. Oh, the benefits of being retired!! :D

Friday the winds are suppose to be 25-28 with gusts to 40 mph. That will make the Bird Dog Challenge even more challenging. Saturday doesn't look much better with winds 15-25 with gusts to 34. Oh well, look on the bright side, temps will be in the mid 50's and no rain or snow.

Hurry Zeb,the snow is getting deep and the Elk are moving out of the high country. In the south area (i think you said area 69/84) they are getting more than they usually do. My cousin is hunting a ranch down there now and thinks the Elk already moved to lower ground, but he is kind of a rookie. Good luck and lets see picks. Big bull I hope. I did see 2 SD guys in unit 16 with a cow each. I got the elk skunk this year.

Good luck Zeb--get a big one, there will be lots of Pheasant hunting left to do when you get back.

The last time I talked to my buddy in Pueblo he said there wasn't much snow up where we hunt. Some in the trees but the open areas were clear. The rancher is reporting lots of elk in the area. Checking the weather and it appears there could be some rain/snow in that area over the weekend and into Monday but after that it looks quite nice. Sunny and highs in the 40's. I'll be getting into camp late afternoon on Tuesday. Not sure if there will be time for an evening hunt or not. As usual I'll be packing for any kind of weather and the .338 is ready to rock. :)

Have a great trip Zeb, looking forward to stories and pics.

Well guys, the weekend at the Ringneck Festival was not very good. First, on Friday in the Bird Dog Challenge, Elle busted the first bird right out of the gate at approx. 50 yds.. The bird caught the 40-50 mph wind and was gone. I did hit it but it glided over a 1/4 mile before coming down someplace behind the spectators. Elle did find the other 4 birds in the field and made nice points and retrieves. Had we gotten that first bird I probably would have finished in the top 4 or 5 out of 32 teams. As it was we ended up in somewhere in the middle of the pack. Ok, now for Saturday and the team competition hunt. Again the winds were blowing 40-50 mph and the land we drew was not the best. It was mainly corn that had been combined and large cattail sloughs with a few smaller potholes mixed it. Birds were scarce and the hunting tough. We walked some of the smaller sloughs but trying those larger ones with water in them was out of the question. We went "balls to the wall" from starting time to quiting time and the 6 of us ended up with 10 roosters. Finishing way out of the money. Everyone on the team was getting quite discouraged and testy by the end of the day. In all likelihood this will be my last Ringneck Festival after 13 years. Just ends up being too much money for one weekend.

I'm hoping and praying that my elk hunt in Colorado goes much better. I figure as bad as the weekend was it can only get better. :) I leave tomorrow morning and will report back upon my return in a week. Hopefully with some good pics of me and a huge bull!

I wouldn't worry to much on your bull migrating just yet!!! The Big boy's are the last to come down!!!!! If you get some new snow, look for solitary tracks and hunt them down!!! I will be leaving when your headed back. Looks to be weather when I leave as well. Headed up by Vail!!! Hate driving the passes in bad weather!!! Hope we have some pic's to share!!! Shoot straight!!!

Sorry you had a windy time at Rooster fest. Good luck on your elk hunt.

I just got back from doing a friend a favor by hauling a calf elk that his son-in-law took yesterday. I am happy to have half of the back strap in my frig fixing to get cooked up. I wish the best of luck to all of you out there still chasing your elk. Bon appetite!

I just wish I had a couple of roosters to cook up with it. Now that would be a fine meal!!!!!:D

Hey George,

How did the contest go at Huron? Assume you won it all!!

Jon
