Burn in the WPRA

65 acres burned in the Central Susquehanna WPRA today. These fields will all be reseeded with switchgrass this year. We have big plans for next year and hope to do a few hundred acres of reseeding:)

Except for food plots, all the grass plantings this year are being done on PPL. We want to make the PPL hunting area the best wild pheasant hunting east of the Mississippi. A position it held in the 60s. After some frustration dealing with FSA and CREP rules, we are excited about a plan we developed at our last PF meeting that will allow us to reseed a lot of CREP next year and do it so that we don't need special FSA approval. Where these's a will, there's a way :cheers:
 
I am old enough to remember when the PPL area was a hot bed for pheasants. Most of our pheasant hunting was done in the South East and South Central area of the state, but when ever we ventured to the "Valley" we were never disappointed. It also held wild birds to a later era, when others areas had lost their birds.
The PPL property is perfect for this, the Refuge Area can act as a safe zone and propagation area for the birds.

Any chance of getting a combined effort from the other Pheasant Forever Chapters in the state to help in these Wild Pheasant Recovery Areas? Something like establishing a healthy population in one, then all moving on to another. Some of our Chapters are located where there is no chance of a wild population, this would be a way they could help make it happen.
 
Fldbred, that is a possibility but I am happy to report that the PGC has offered to pay for the seed for this year's planting. Hopefully we will continue to get help as they are taking more of an interest due to the fantastic increase in the flushing survey this year. Nothing succeeds like success!
 
I know I often sound like an advocate for the PGC, but it is for good reason. They flat out get it!!!
If your Chapter is having a work day in the PPL or elsewhere and could use an extra pair of hands let us know!

You guys are doing some good work up there. I hope the spring helps you out with a good hatch for the birds you already have.
